DIY popsicle stick ladder

Postby Ryan416 » Fri Jul 23, 2010 12:42 am

I made these tonight, wondering your opinions. Is this safe to leave with a small parrot, unattended?

They are of natural rope and colored popsicle sticks. The sticks can be replaced if chewed to shreds. I can provide instructions if anyone is interested?

I call it the "birdwalk"

very cool idea... will be safe until the popsicle sticks reveal string, or if the bird you get has feet/toes that can fit through the spaces in between. just keep a close eye out. if you feel like there is a safety issue just restring so they are further apart or closer.

also, i witnessed a caique lose toes over a pinata type thing that got too stringy, his toe got so tangled that he freaked out and hung upsidedown all night. just always double check toys every day for missing parts/ loose strings etc....

I know, I'm going to keep an eye out for signs of danger. I can always replace the popsicle sticks with colored wooden dowels.

So sad! I lost a love bird once because she got tangled up in strings from one of those birdie huts she chewed open and couldn't get free. I try to avoid any fabric or rope that can fray

Do you meant the wooden ladder? That's actually resting on top of the perch. It's hard to avoid stacking things with a vertical cage like this, there is going to be a poop on everything.

Thanks, been working hard at it. Is your cage 18x18x30? How does your Conure like it, does utilize most of the cage or just the top half?

I've been thinking of trying something like this with some branches from my lemon tree, I wasn't sure if I would need to drill holes in the sticks or not or if I could just tie them... she would so totally chomp the popsicle sticks in a day though! :D
oh and I have a similiar sized cage and my conure spends most of her time on the top half depending on how I set it up but she likes to play with foot toys on the bottom when they fall ^_^

yup thats the one :D skeeter usually stays in the top half of course thats probable because that is where his hut and most of his toys are he would probably use more if he had beter toys down there but he does go down there if there is something interesting buy ya its a nice little cage and i think he likes fine.

I don't know if you will need to tie knots around them. If you are using sisal or seagrass twisted rope, you can soak it in warm water and untwist just enough to fit the branches through. by counting the twists you can adjust the spacing perfectly.

Think between Michaels "cheap" toy idea and this one.....I need to make a dollar store trip!

...now to figure out where to find sisal rope!
