How many toys is too many toys?

Postby jayebird » Thu Sep 30, 2010 10:45 pm

Okay, I admit it. My first paycheck from my new job went almost entirely to buying new fun things to play with and toys for Mango. But my question is - is there such a thing as too many toys in the cage?

He's a GCC and his cage is about 20" x 24" x 33" inside dimensions, plus a domed top, (his cage is about as tall as me but those are his actual domain dimensions) so he has pleeeenty of space to climb around and flap his wings in lots of areas with absolutely no trouble. I've read/been told that you should keep 4 toys in the cage and change 3 of them out each month (leave his absolute favorite).

But what if there's 5 or 6 or 7 toys in the cage and he still has more room than he uses and flaps his wings all the time and climbs around to play with all of them? I don't know.....can you give your bird ADD with too many toys or something?

I'd just worry more about long term. If he's used to having 10 toys in a cage and suddenly there's an income issue, or you just dont want to have to spend money on that many new toys, and you drop the number down, the bird might be like, WHY DOES MY CAGE FEEL SO EMPTY. It's more about not spoiling the bird in general. I don't think a certain number will be the downfall of it's personality, haha.

My bird is very happy with one preening toy, one foraging toy, two foot toys, and one big hanging acrylic/wood toy.

Scarlet's cage has like 5 toys in it, but she likes to migrate between them. Jake is a one-at-a-time kinda bird so he normally only has 2/3 toys at a time along with a swing or boing. I say as long as the bird has enough room to move, more the merrier!! You can always put extra toys on a playstand/play area if she really needs it

I put as many toys as I can in the cage while still leaving them room to stretch out their wings. I tend to spoil them though. I really don't think you can have too many toys as long as they aren't cramped. I like to have one of each type at least... a swing, a shredder, a forager, some wood to chew on etc. They also each have adding paper hung from the top so they can chew on that and they each have a bucket full of foot toys in their cages.

to me if a bird is constantly dodging and ducking under toys and stepping over them there is to many having less and rotating them works better for me i keep it at 3-6 toys not including perches and ladders rotating them every 3-4 days, i also give my birds browse they absolutely love it

If you can't find the bird, that's too many toys, maybe?

Scooter has a plastic chain, a big rubber geodesic-ball--thngy with a bell in it and a sleep tent which are permanent features and then he has three toys that rotate.

As much as I'd love to give my birds as many toys in their cages as they could stand....on a student's budget that just isnt possible :(
Because I believe variety and rotation is better than amount I'd say there's no more than 3-4 toys in my birds' cages at any given time---the tradeoff is I can rotate them around every 3 or so days for 3-4 completely new ones (I have a basket---each bird has 12 toys). I *could* break the bank and get more toys in at one time but I honestly think its better that I spend that money on fresh food and a healthy diet.
