I was just poking around a bit, and have not found colored PVC that I think would be bird safe. Anyone who has used PVC, did you just use the white stuff? Do you have a favored source?

Oh, but wait -- this sounds promising: http://www.candsplastics.com/ It appears to be the same pipe sold at this dog agility oriented site:http://www.arfandrunning.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=browse&id=42173&pageid=32. Their website specifically cites the use of their product in commercial bird toys and they certify the material pthalate and heavy metal free.

FWIW, I'm hatching plans to make something like that, except it will sit on the cagetop playstand rather than hanging. I plan to use cotton rope or sisal.

Nope, it's cotton.

When you find colored pvc and fittings, let me know. So far I can make those any size using white pvc and fittings. Sometime pex plumbing pipes can be used and are colorful, like red, white and blue. Can't wait to get started.

Looks pretty simple and easy to make. Should be good fun, thanks for the idea!

Postby Polarn » Thu Jan 12, 2012 4:10 am

inspired by this i decided to spend some time yesterday "pulling rope" with Polarn... dunno how much he helped tho, he mostly grabbed the end of the rope and pulled it away the wrong way so that i had to get up and go fetch it again... I might add my fingers does hurt today from tying all the knots... But Polarn found it funny to help out tying all the rope and he seems to enjoy his new swing climbing all over, also I might add that if I were to redo it I would probably opt for shorter peices of rope... think the blue rope used was 25 meters, and it is one single continious peice, the white is 3 ropes 10 meters each... anyways heres a little picture (also added a swing under it, wich he seem to like using when I am sitting at the somputer, puts him just below shoulder hight).
Image
as you might see i decided to go with wood instead of pvc, gives him something to chew to peices :) also I was slightly worried about all that rope and the risk of him getting tangled, but i managed to tighten it up so they got pretty high tension so I cant move the ropes (in the mesh) anything, and I figured if I'm not possible to move em around or anything Polarn shouldnt be able to seeing he is only 1/200 of my weight hehe.

I bought it from a vendor at the Canadian Parrot Conference that was held three weeks ago. Not sure they have a website..

The company that makes the toy is Zoo-Max.

Found the website! http://us.zoo-max.com/default.aspx :D

That's really great! Also, the plastic is more slippery the wood, so the wood has better grip and that's always better
