The Jolly ball

Postby Natacha » Sun Oct 04, 2009 11:09 am

Do any of you guys have one?

I've been holding off getting one for so long. Can't deny that they are expensive and I was afraid that my birds would be terrified of it and I would have spent all that money for nothing. I was also worried that they would slip on the inside, since the ball is made of plastic.

Well, not too long ago one of the online bird stores I do business with stocked up on them and they happened to be really reasonably priced so I got a large one (the store has since sold out of that size and restocked, but are now selling them for more..). All my fears were put to rest before I even took the Jolly ball out of it's box. Joey wanted in really badly. He is my biggest chicken and he went straight for it. Shade and Zuri have also taken a shine to it. I've added toys on the inside and the outside and Piper will chew on the one outside. They appear to not be slipping on the inside either. And the biggest bonus I didn't really think of before getting it? Because it's made of plastic, it cleans so well!

I have since bought a second one, purple this time (the first one is red). Shade didn't really like the colour but seems to be getting ok with it now. Zuri loves the second one as much as first, maybe even a bit more because it came with more interesting toys.

Since I got them, they have been played with plenty; definitively worth the purchase. I've heard good things about the Jolly balls and now I understand why.

Of course, I got pictures...

First day I got it, these were taken with Joey in the ball and me holding it up (didn't get a chance to hang it right away)

These were taken a few days later, Shade is playing model this time..

(Oh and if this seems like I'm trying to sell them, please let me know as it's not my intent. I was just sharing about a product I felt my birds love and seems like a good investment.)

This is really interesting. I've never heard of these before. I'm wondering, does this encourage nesting behavior at all?

So far I haven't seen any nesting behaviours.
There are so many toys to play with inside and out that they seem to just hang out in them and play with the toys.

I haven't put any of them in their cages either. I'd be more concerned having something like a nest inside their own territory than on common play areas.

Yeah, nest behavior is the first thing that came to my mind when I saw that. Why are they expensive? How expensive? It just looks like a plastic ball with a hole in it. I have a hollowed out coconut toy for Kili that is kind of like that but she doesn't seem to care for it too much and I've never seen her go inside.

What did you do to make them overcome the fear of going in?

I think it's the type of plastic they are made of; I definitively won't see any of my birds destroy them.

Depending on where you get them, they are more or less expensive because of the amount of (or lack of) extra toys attached to the Jolly ball. I paid the first one $25 CAN and it had little toys attached to it and paid $40 CAN for the second one, but it came LOADED with extras.

None of them were really afraid of the first one, the red one.
The only one really showing some dislike for the second one, the purple one, is Shade. I'm assuming she got used to seeing it there and not having it attack her.

They don't seem to use it to sleep in; only to play in and around it. It's like a gym on it's own.

There are enough holes in the ball (three of four of them) to make it open enough that I don't think they'll confuse it as a nest.

That's cool. I guess the downside is that they might poop inside the ball, but at least it's probably easy to clean off.

It is quite easy to clean.
I did keep an eye on mine and they haven't pooped inside too much; they tend to step out to do so and then go back in.

Where are you kimbo? I've found them in two places... http://www.pionusparrot.com/shop/index. ... ex&cPath=2 and http://www.djfeathers.com/store/jollyball.htm. I'm waiting to have enough money to get one. I've tried finding just the ball on it's own but so far no luck.

BTW Natacha- what size did you get for your Poi? One site tells me 6 inch is correct and the other says the 10 inch.
