Empty Toilet Paper Roll?

Postby Carry » Fri Jan 07, 2011 11:57 pm

I have been giving my little :gcc:'s empty toilet paper rolls every once in a while to play with, and was curious if that was an alright toy for them? My female seems to like them a lot, always using her little mighty beak to cut it in half and ect.

Bad idea. See a previous discussion about toiler paper tubes:

Probably ok for climbing through and tricks but there are members who expressed concern about parrots chewing on these.

I use ones that don't have glue. Some brands typically do not, you just have to shop around and find them. The ones in your picture don't have obvious glue, and I'd guess they are probably OK. I usually have one hung on Scooter's playstand for chewing, and we have an extra-heavy roll of similar dimensions (No glue, it was packaging of some sort) that he likes to stick his head in and look through (I posted a video a while ago).

I'm with entranced. I only give the ones that don't have any glue on them. As she said there are brands that don't have glue. I also discovered that left over wrapping paper rolls are good as well. I cut them into shorter pieces. Lucy destroys one in no time!

Try to avoid the toilet paper rolls, think about the germs. Stick with paper towel and wrapping paper rolls.

I think this is more psychological than actual. Think about it... you touch the roll BEFORE the paper touches all the germs... and when the roll is empty, you wash your hands before you take it off the holder. The rest of the time it's just sitting there. I don't consider my TP to be any germier than my bathroom counter. The towels I've been using, now THOSE I would worry about. And the kitchen sponge -- right out.

I'm pretty OCD about things like that, so I'm sticking to my toilet paper rolls. But while we're on the subject on dirty bathroom items, reconsider giving baths in the bathroom or kitchen sinks. Those are filled with germs. Think about everything you do in a sink. Wash your hands, prepare your food, brush your teeth, etc.

And while your at it, clean the computer keyboard a little more often. They are the germiest place in your home. Back in high school biology, I grew fungus from various different places. The keyboard was worse then the public drinking fountain and the public wash rooms.

But don't use dangerous chemicals. Harmful for you, and harmful for your bird. A great natural disinfectant is vinegar! Chances are, it's what your grandparents cleaned their houses with. It's safe for your birds, and due to it's acidity, it is effective in killing germs, mold and bacteria. Vinegar might smell bad, but at least I know it's not hurting anyone but the things it's supposed to.

End of OCD rant. :)

But what about the flushing of the toilet? Toilet flushes can actually send a tooooon of germs and icky stuff flying. I'm a weird neat freak so I always shut the toilet before I flush for this reason, but I know most people don't. Wouldn't be surprised if a lot of that stuff landed on the toilet paper rolls though.

That's true. We keep our tooth brushes inside the bathroom cabinet, that way our tooth brushes are a little more protected.
