Before you throw away that chewed up toy...

See if you can scavenge it to make a new one!

Einstein had almost completely destroyed one of the toys I recently got him. He really liked this toy, so next time I`m in the city, I`m going to pick one up for him. Anyways, the toy wasn't completely destroyed yet, and I found some cardboard. The toy went from looking like :

Well done!

Yes, with chew up toys I ALWAYS salvage all the reusable parts. Plastic will last a long time, and metal pieces close to forever. There are lots of places you can buy replacement wood parts from for much less than buying premade toys.

Good job with reusing what you can.

I have actually stopped spending so much money on actual toys and spending my money on buying toy parts. I reuse whatever parts I can and for the most part make my own toys now. Its a lot cheaper and to be honest I think they like them better. I make them look different each time and they are always excited to get new toys in their cage now.

yes iv started buying less and less bought toys, i just got my order of willow munch balls, bamboo fingers, leather strips and wooden beads. i also keep all bottle tops and raisin boxes, and i can find cat toy balls and kids playing jax and a lot of stuff that can be turned into bird toys at dollar stores. i think the most i have spent on a toy was Jangos tiki hut (#20) and qwils big plastic bridge type swing with a bell ( $25) i just spend $20 on these toy parts and thats a good $3 months worth or parts, and thats before i add free stuff like raisin boxes and bottle tops

i always reuse what i can, from my bird barn you can buy this shredding toy for $6 but its got a stainless steel clip stainless steel chain wooded beads and cotton rope, so i can reuse the stainless steel for almost forever the wooden beads last about 6 rounds (jangos not a destroyer) and i chuck the rope and paper out

actually if you look at my thread i put in the toys sections is making a toy out of grapevine. the stainless steel chains and clips came off $6 shredder toys and also the beads i put on the grapevines are from them too. and the leather strips i used on the grapevines were off Jangos first toy i bought him :) so the grapevine toys were almost made out of recycled material except for the cat ball

I've been doing this for years - whatever parts from toys that they boys have dropped on the ground, or are hanging around on a sad looking (but well-loved toy), and make it into new fun!

So even when you purchase new toys, you'll either a) have parts leftover from previous toys, or b) have new parts to add to the new toys once they have been whittled down.

I also find rotating toys often helps salvage the toys a bit too.
