Help with Parakeet not playing with toys

Postby Crash-Cheetah » Thu Feb 03, 2011 5:53 pm

Millie doesn't seem to like toys. I've tried to show her by taping them and ringing the bells. I've even tried attaching Millet to them. she only eats the millet and than goes to sit on her perch. All she does is sit on her perch and eat. I have taken her out to play with a waffel ball, but she ignores them and just sits on my desk and only stares at her cage. She likes to chew those seed log type things(not sure what you would really call them) and so I got her a real chew toy. Something from Crazy beaks, a bird chime. She doesn't do anything with it.

I've gotten her a Mirror, she doesn't play with it. I've gotten her hanging rings and bells, she refuses to play with them.

I don't know what to do. I don't want her to be bored and just let her sit on her perch. My sister also has a Parakeet. We let them see each other everyday. Her parakeet plays with toys and everything. I don't understand why Millie doesn't like toys. She acts as if she's afraid of them...

I really hate to see her just sitting on her perch. Most of the time I think she's just daydreaming.

I've tried bells and Swings. She does get up on a swing, but only to move around her cage.

Have you considered getting another budgie? My birds seem to learn from example.

Like the other day. Einstein never took to his cuttle bones. I tried and tried, but they were left untouched. I eventually stopped buying them for him. Now that all my birds have large flight cage, they enter each others cages for little visits. Einstein watched Bonnie chewing on her cuttle bone. Then all of a sudden, Einstein was too. It was the strangest thing.

Maybe if you bought another budgie (kept in a different cage, so both budgies stay bonded to you) and have them out together during play time, maybe she will learn from example.
Bonnie - :budgie2:
Clyde - :budgie:
Einstein - :greycockatiel:
Alyssa -

She does get to play with Criss (My sisters Parakeet). They get to see each other everyday. Sometimes we leave them together in the same cage if we are going to be gone for over a day. She still doesn't play with toys.
