I started with a large plastic plant pot and some florists foam. I cut the foam into a cylinder half the diameter of the pot and the same depth, and put it in the center. Then filled the rest of the pot with aquarium gravel I had sitting around. Then I went out to find the 'trunk'. I didn't have to go far, I discovered the fake tree in the living room was perfect. The wood is very soft and white, no smell, I do believe it is just plain pine branches. I pulled off all the plastic branches and leaves, then carefully cut/scraped off any trace of glue or plastic. I scrubbed them in the shower with scalding hot water and plain soap, and let them dry. Then I took a long knife and carefully cut the center of the floral foam in the pot to make holes for the trunks. They fit in quite snugly and the whole things is pretty secure. A lot of shaking/pulling could rip it out of the base, but that ain't gonna happen. I wish I took pics as I went along...
Then it was just a matter of dismantling her other stands (two small store-bought java trees, and a willow branch I collected), and screwing them to the tree. I used plastic zip ties to further secure them. I also attatched an old chess board as a table. I filled the remainder of the base with the bag of 'yesterdays news' cat litter that's been around sicne forever. Then all I had to do was add toys! I love it and so does Akilah. It's eash to move around, is nice and tall and lots of room to hang toys. I enjoyed making it to, I can see this room being a forest at some point...
Annnnyway, pic;

Here she is enjoying the window view
While we're at it here is her cage. Guess the pic was too big, a bit of it got cut off...

and the spoiled one herself. She'd still rather sit on me and play with my shirt, of course
