Toys Amy would enjoy?

Postby Ilovebirds » Tue Feb 22, 2011 2:26 pm

She is a Blue Mutation pacific parrotlet and she is scared of many of th toys we buy her. (She has a lot 40+)

Any ideas what she would enjoy. She does not play with them and will make loud noise unless we play with her and we would like a recommended toy that will keep her busy.

Try introducing toys to her outside her cage, on her own terms - it might be less intimidating for her to "meet" her new toys this way :)

And once you're able to determine what materials she likes (i.e. bells, sisal, paper, palm leaf), then try to ensure her toys encorporate this material to encourage play.

Have you tried making her jealous? Recently, I bought a bunch of foot toys. My birds didn't really understand them. So, took them all out, and I completely ignored them. I then started playing with the toys. Eventually, out of pure jealousy, they will approach the toy. Soon enough, they all were having a blast chewing on coconut shells.

My parrotlet likes the cockatiel pacifier: http://www.petdiscounters.com/Large-Coc ... 12446.html
And cat balls: http://www.arcatapet.com/item.cfm?cat=1639
And she likes her swing.

You can also try putting the toy(s) about one to two feet away from her cage and let her just see the toy for a couple of weeks before you put it in the cage for her. Gradually bring the toy closer to her cage every couple of days or so depending how she reacts.

Also, what size cage do you have her in? I put my parrotlet in a huge cage that was about 30" square and she was really timid and put off by it-she's just stay hunched in a corner and did not move around except to eat and drink. I now have her in a pretty tiny cage - about 12" square and she's much more secure and active in it. I have her out all the time so I'm not concerned that the cage is so small.
