What kind of player is your parrot?

Postby Michael » Thu Apr 28, 2011 8:48 pm

Does your parrot play in front of you or only in private? Does it like to show off hanging off toys or uses them as a hiding place from activity? If you have multiple parrots, vote for the most typical situation or the average. Then in the comments, mention your parrots' playing habits.

My budgie is vigorous and is a hoot to watch. She will play with anything and everything in any contorted position. She plays like a monkey in the cage and does her ground parakeet thing on the cage top.

My tiel likes to walk around and play by pecking and chewing. He is pretty clumsy but I have a large roof on my flight cage, which is littered with all sorts of toys. That is how my tiel plays, he won't touch much that I hang in the cage.

Our GCC's like to play rough, running through tunnels, play-fighting, doing flips atop their perch, they really have fun playing together, I could sit and watch them for hours! (Actually I have, maybe not for hours though)
Our Australian parrots are much less playful, apart from maybe Prince, he has oodles of fun pushing things off edges

I didn't vote because the playing styles of Einstein and the budgies are completely different.

When Einstein is with me, all he wants to do is cuddle. He'll sometimes bring a chew toy over to me and play with it with me, but this is not very common. He mostly likes to play in the privacy and comfort of his cage.

The budgies on the other hand, are non stop playing machines. As long as there is light, they are on the move. They will do anything to have fun. Bonnie has recently taken up perching on the ceiling fan (which is never on), and flapping her wings. This causes the fan to start spinning.

Cheney Bird likes to play when he's not being held. He'd rather be cuddled than play, but when he is playing, it's pretty vigorous. He tore through three toys in the matter of minutes the past couple of days. One of them could be saved, but the other two were pretty much goners. He seems to like to chew most; bells are his second favorite.

The budgies seem to play by flying. They do laps around the room together and chase eachother. They have a curly pom pom that they like to preen with, an acrylic swing with a bell they like to ding, and some shredder toys they like to play with. I'd say they play moderately all day, where Cheney Bird plays vigorously for short bursts.

Jolene will quietly play in her cage. She doesnt mind playing in front of us, so she isnt shy about it. Every once in a while she will do crasy stuff like hang up side down but not that often.

You may not believe this, but neither Bucky nor JJ seem to play at all. Neither chew or mess with any of the toys in their cages at all... they still look like new. I've played with the toys (for over an hour in one case) in an attempt to make them more interesting, but the birds would rather hang with us than play. They're strange little birdies.

The rescue thought that with Cheney Bird, too. They said he never played with toys. Once I got him, I realized pretty quickly that he didn't play with the toys he had because he didn't like those toys. They gave him acrylic toys with tiny bells, most of which looked to be budgie sized. I gave him wooden, leather and rope toys. Now I feel like I have my own personal wood chipper. I actually need to go to PETsMART tomorrow to pick up a couple of their popcicle stick toys because he gnawed through it already.

Kayla, try a dollar store as my local one sells bags of uncolored popsicle sticks for a dollar each.

I have a box of 500 uncolored jumbo popsicle sticks. They can't get enough of them.
