Hanging Play-gym?

Postby Kirsten » Wed May 11, 2011 9:30 am

So I've found that I often don't take Skittles up to my room that much since most of her fun things are on her mobile wheel perch. Awhile ago, I bought one of these: http://www.petco.com/product/105862/Sup ... enter.aspx

I never put it together since it looked complicated and I honestly had nowhere to put it. So after buying her a boingo (those swirly bouncy coil perches) the idea occurred that I might be able to create sort of a hanging play area next to her cage. My room is actually a finished attic. The ceiling slants on two ends and Skittles is against one of those walls. It's low enough I might be able to drill in some bits to hang toys from. Of course this has to come after I clean my room (which may take days!). I was also thinking of putting some cargo netting up there for her to get around on as well as put a hard plastic mat beneath her playground so it'll be easy to clean. So generally, I was hoping someone would have some advice or something.

Edit: Oops! Maybe this should be under Housing....

Definitely look at anything Natacha has done in her bird room. It's like bird heaven!

There are crazy things you can do from the ceiling for sure, Natacha's video has a lots and lots of ideas. If you google "bird parrot room" or something like that, you will a lot more videos/images of others.

As for the flooring, I have a few suggestions. If its carpet, you can buy some of that temporary carpet protector that is stick on one side and lay it down wherever they may poo. It wipes right off of it, and can last for a very long time. Drywallers, or home improvement people use it, as do painters to a lesser degree. Underneath the cage you can put a piece of hardboard, it is shiny white on one side and comes in 4'x8' sheets and about 1/8 - 1/4" in thickness. Very easy to clean and the cage and roll around on it.

I have found that any surface with even the slightest bit of texture is a pain to clean, things like vinyl, or plastic throw type material. It needs to be nice and smooth and the poo wipes right up.
