Is catnip harmful?

Postby Chris&Akilah » Mon Jun 20, 2011 12:10 pm

There are many cat toys out there that I think my bird would enjoy. Sisal toys, those with bells and feathers, etc. Even one that chirps like a bird when thrown around. But they all say "infused with catnip", even if there is no actual catnip in them they are apparantly scented with it. Is it safe to let parrots play with these kind of toys?
thanks

I don't know if any research has been done, but I'd be inclined to avoid it. I'm suspicious of herbs that have documented physiological effects in other species. Catnip is in the mint family and a lot of the effect it has on cats is strictly a reaction to the scent itself, but unless someone can point to a study in birds it would be on the not-worth-the-risk side of my personal boundary. But that's purely opinon.
