Popsicle sticks

Postby roseicollis6 » Wed Nov 09, 2011 9:53 am

Hi,

I saw some videos and read articles on the blog, Michael uses popsickle sticks for toys. I know that some types of wood are toxic for birds and not for humans and the only wood we can give is the non toxic type and has to be natural. Is pop sickle sticks safe for parrots? How can we know the type of wood used for it?
Thanks.

Popsicle sticks are okay. They really like the ones that had the popsicle.
Somewhere in the forum is the type of wood that can be used. If you purchase wood make sure it has not been treeted.

I use what I have in my yard (maple, oak, red tip, rose of sharon, crape myrtle and etc. When I make a perch I leave the little twigs on and let them pick them off.

If you buy them in a package read the label. Since most are used for hobbies I doubt that they would go through the expense of treeting them. If you buy them in a foodie store they will be safe.

If I want to use the sticks after finishing it, no marksof the type of wood. Same fot chopsticks, i have a bunch of them but i am not sure if they treat them or are made of a safe wood for my parrot. He likes to chew them but I am afraid to give them to him. If you are sure please tell me!

chopsticks are pressure treated which means they smash the smooth surface on them - no chemical

Treated wood costs more. If you buy wood from someplace like Home Depot or Lowes it will say so.
Don't use plywood because it is glued.
Things like tomatoe stakes are not treated.
