More homemade toys!!

Postby rebeccaturpeinen » Wed Nov 09, 2011 12:30 pm

I have made some more toys... tell me what you think!!

This is what the table looks like before I start...

Here is a perch I made, the wooden parts can rotate and has already been approved by Jo :)

I learned how to open a coconut and clean it :) I'll be making more toys with coconuts... I have so many ideas!
Image

Its not so clear in the picture but there is a plastic cube with shapes that can be stuffed with things for foraging.

Another coconut toy with wooden spoons and a small wooden plate.

This one has fun colours :)

I really like this one... I found some wooden bells that I sandpapered (they were bright red first). This is like a hanging playstand!

This one has lots of stuff going on...

And this is a foraging basket. I made it so the toys hanging beside it can be taken off so I can replace them.

Those look like toys from Petsmart! You must have spent a lot of time on that. Open a store or something. I would buy those.

Wonderful job on the toys. The colors and shapes are awesome. Could you share the information on where you get your supplies to make them. The stores closest to me don't have much to choose from. I may have to do some online shopping.

Thanks~

Here in Brazil we dont have really good toys for birds, so I try making them at home too :)
the problem is here we dont have those colorful safe woods and stuff. I have to travel to USA again just to buy a stock of material hehe. Congrats for your toys they are awesome!!

Have you ever tried dying your own toys?
I bought some of those gel baking dyes for dying cake icing and they work AMAZINGLY!
Just a tiny bit of the gel mixed with a few drops of water, then get a paint brush and brush the colour onto the wood. Dry it with a hair dryer and continue to layer the colour on there until it is the vibrancy that you want.
It only takes a couple coats to get the colour really opaque and bright, it's easy to do and over in Canada the icing gel dyes are fairly cheap- I bought four different colours in a pack for $4 CAD.

thats a wonderful idea!!! i wasnt sure if baking colors ware safe for birds, so i never tried, thanks a lot for the tip :)

Oh can you tell me what tipe of wood are afe for the parrots too? I heard Pine is safe, is it really? becaus I can buy the wood and cut it myself to make toys..

we dont have those "toys parts" here in brasil, this is because there are not too many people who would buy it..so the "market" just dont do it.
so when we want to make, its really really make hehe
