Handmade, safe, AND affordable

Postby supermomwannabe » Thu Dec 01, 2011 2:12 pm

I have an african grey and a citron crested cockatoo. I have always found toys to be very expensive, which makes it difficult considering the cockatoo will strip her toys down to the rope in one afternoon! I recently reviewed some new toys and was actually very impressed with the affordability, durability, and safety. For the love of birds, have a look:

Well I don't sell them...I actually just did a review and am actually impressed that the toys are as durable as they are. One of the toys that i gave to my cockatoo is still fully in tact after 3 days of her chewing on it (bitten up but in tact) - and that is saying a lot if you saw the quick work she makes of most toys. The toy is a $10 toy...most of the big toys i buy are a lot more expensive than that and are gone in one afternoon. Some bird lovers may appreciate knowing about them, and I thought forums were for sharing information and others that may be seeking advice. I thought a parrot forum might be a good place to share the review and info.

dollar stores are amazing, the list is endless

wooden pegs, wika baskets, bamboo leaf chinese finger traps, booxen boxes, jax, cat bell balls, you can even buy cotton rope (not platted)

using your creativ side you can create your own toys which cost no more than $5

I have noticed that any toys which are made to hang in the cage from a rope type material, attached to the quick-link, the birds chew the rope, detaching it from the quick-link. Then this toy falls to the bottom of the cage, and if has fallen in the poo - the toy has to be thrown away from then being infected with the poo (if it is not plastic and therefore cannot be washed). Thus, leaving you with a result of you've spent all this money on a toy, which your bird cannot even use or enjoy tearing up, because before he got a chance to do so, the toy became ruined from being infected that way, and is no longer usable. Waisted money. It is better to buy and only use toys which are strung on those chains, made with the chain, for as part of the part which attaches to the quick-link attached to the cage. This is because then the bird cannot get the toy loose from hanging from the cage in this way. In this way, the toy does not have a chance to fall to the bottom of the cage where poo falls, where it can get infected. I will watch for this, and I would no longer buy toys made with rope hanging mechanisms. It is ok to have rope coming off of the toy, but as far as going through the toy, needs to be a chain, or that thin sterling silver bendable wire, which they can not chew through. This is because it has to be strong for these reasons, to stay securely hanging. That's why they make "hanging" chew toys for cages, to keep them out of the poo as best as possible.
