wooden coffee stirrers

Postby sintpaljaske » Mon Mar 05, 2012 4:08 pm

Hi

I have found a very cheap toy to make (and to destroy) that my lovebird absolutely adores.
I took wooden coffee stirrers from work and tied them with a rope so that it looks like a little ladder. The stirrers are parallell and I hange about 7 above each other with about 3-5 cm in between. I hang the top of the rope from his perch so that he can't easily get to it.
He enjoys very much having to pull them up with his beak and use his foot to hold it while he chews a stick. And then another one, till after a couple of days he chewed all of them to pieces.
And then I just stick new sticks in the knots and ladder is as new again. Takes every time less than a minute.

I have just one question: these are wooden stirrers for human consumption so I presumed that they are safe. However, presumptions are dangerous things and I would greatly appreciate if someone could confirm that they are safe. Or to warn me if they are not.

Thanks a lot!
Maarten
