Playing it safe... rubber bath pan?

Postby greenfeathers » Tue Apr 24, 2012 1:25 pm

I have recently constructed my new 5ft by 15ft (by 6ft tall) outdoor aviary, and now I'm to the fun part - filling it up with toys and perches and making it a fun place for the birds to be!

One of the things I wanted to put in there is a large bath basin, big enough for my B&G Macaw to use comfortably and shallow enough for my Blue Front Amazon. I got the idea of using a flexible rubber feed pan - basically this: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Manna-Pro-Feeding-Pan-3-gal/19794521 The flexibility would allow me to bend it and secure it into the right location, and I could fill it halfway with some large, smooth stones to make it shallow. (And I'm sure the macaw, who has never shown interest in water, would LOVE to dig the rocks out and throw them at me!)

I picked up such a pan while I was in town recently. Because it's new, it smells strongly like rubber (it's made from recycled tires), and like all things that have a strong/unnatural smell, I wonder about how it could affect the health of my birds. Unfortunately I couldn't find much about it after a Google search or two, so I figured I would ask the bird community here!

Could a rubber pan like that have ill effects on my birds' health if they chew on it or bathe in it, or am I just paranoid?
