Do you build your own toys for your parrots? What proportion do you make/source yourself vs buy packaged for parrots? Is there a reason you prefer to make or buy?
I wish I could make my own toys more! I make a few things- paper stuffed toilet paper rolls etc but nothing fancy. I'm not crafty enough to design and put together some of the toys I see people make here! So I voted make some buy most!
Make most of the toys myself and I think most if not all store bought ones have had some changes. I usually pick up a few from the store when I'm there anyways. But other than that I like em chewing through natural wood and as long as its fresh they seem to enjoy it. Also have some swinging toys made most out of natural wood and hemp rope, and that's also a reason why I pick up some store ought ones, to get some colors into the mIx.
I buy most toys though I can make simple ones out of unused egg cartons, small boxes, coconut shell etc. I also cheat a bit with DIY toys by creating new ones out of old ones because I'm no good with woodwork. I plan on making more in the future and hopefully getting a bit more creative with them. I tend to not get round to stuff like that though, I've had a roll of sisal for godknows how long which I was planning to make a cargo net out of for the play tree.
I build most toys now, but they are built from part natural wood, part things from home and part pre-made toys. For this reason I usually buy a couple of toys, and then convert them into a lot more toys. Generally one store bought toy becomes 3 toys, and with a lot of wood added they are better chewing wise =)!
Liz- I'd love to say those two birds in my avatar are my babies, but they are not I love that picture though since it does have my bird species in it! I hope to get my two together some day and get a shot as good as that one- but well have to wait and see.
So far, I've bought all of Scrubby's toys, but I'm definitely going to start making them. I have preformed "toy surgery" a couple times to make franken-toys, and (just based on that) it seems like a much better route for a number of reasons.
The toy part stores online were too expensive due to shipping. :/ But I buy toys and then after she tears through them I string toy parts from a local bird store (pieces of wood, finger traps, etc) and cleaned corks. She loves it. It's pretty funny though she's finicky about the grain of wood. If the wood grain is going length wise she won't chew it because it's too difficult I guess. What a baby!
I need to find a place where it's economical to buy wood in bulk that's bird safe. Because wow she's a chewer. I bought a toy from Petco that I know she loves (it has circular wood and she enjoys that style a lot, too bad I can't find it bulk anywhere) and it was basically demolished by this morning.
