I first figured this out when Yoshi and Cocoa were in my yard. My mom had just finished pruning a bush and there were twigs scattered across the grass. Yoshi picked one up and ran around with it in his beak. I tried to take it from him and he wouldn't let go! He was just like a puppy with a rope. I picked up a few twigs and we went inside.
The next day, I wanted to know what he'd do if I attached some to his cage. I checked on the twigs two days later and he had chewed all the bark off of them.
Yoshi invented a little game with twigs. I put a twig on the table, chair, rock, or whatever he's sitting on. He'll go running over to it and throw it off. I'll put it back on and he throws it off! It goes on about six or seven times.
If you have a small bird, try giving them a twig and see what they do. Yoshi loves 'em.
