toys for a Senegal

Postby guardianmax » Sat Sep 01, 2012 8:39 am

Does anyone know what would be a good toy for a senegal that would last for more than 30 minutes before being totally destroyed? My senegal goes through wood toys like they were make of paper and turns them into almost powder.

Check out this thread for some cheap ideas, most of them probably won't last 5 minutes either with a senegal but it doesn't matter as much if its cost you less/nothing.

Also see if you can get some untreated safe wood leftovers from somewhere that deals in wood, they may give it too you or charge a small fee but you should be able to make something out of them.

You could get some bells and mirrors. Sometimes bells and mirrors can be fun too! My birds have bells and mirrors that spin. You could also get rope toys for climbing and chewing. There are a lot of possible fun toys that can't be shredded!

I just gotta coment on the mirror thing, I do not think mirrors are a suitable toy for any bird, its suprising how they still at petstores etc keep the mirrorswings etc in stock, couse they shouldnt sell good enough for it to be worth stocking them really.
There is a couple of problems giving mirrors to birds: first off it quite often increases territorial behavior and they will guard the area where the mirror is by chasing off anyone getting close, and this is a minor problem really. The bigger problem is what it does to their brains, since their not talking with another bird they do not receive a natural response to their action and therefor it ruins their social skills, a bird who is chattering away with a mirror constantly will if they meet another real bird dont know how to act, since it is used to its own reflection that can only mimmick. this said, try do a search on birds and mirrors and do some reading and then decide weather or not you wish to use mirrors to entertain your bird(s).

Wow I didn't know about what you said about mirror toys! The good news is, I only have one mirrored toy. It spins. Cocoa never really liked toys anyways. Yoshi likes the mirror but he only really enjoys spinning it. It never really seemed like he was to interested in the actual mirror, he just liked that it moved when he touched it. After what Polarn said, I won't buy anymore mirror toys! Thanks for the info!

although when you keep several birds I imagine the negative effects of the mirror might be less since the bird actually gets real interaction as well, anyways just liked to mention it so that you could do a search online and see what different sources sais, however in some cases im more safe than sorry and there is plenty of things they like besides mirrors. As for toysuggestions tried the hard plastic foraging ones? Polarn hasa circular thing he needs to rotae to get treats out, but even when there isnt anything in it he still cranks that plate, He also tends to like swings and he will gain quite a good speed on them too. Otherwise like yours wooden toys are destroyed pretty quick, so I just make my own wooden blocks and string em up.

good quality toys with mostly metal, acrylic plastic parts, beads, and bells always last me the longest and tend to be favorites with my guys. that being said, i do buy some wooden toys that are a little on the large size because they do like chewing/shredding and bigger toys (just with more wood- not necessarily larger pieces) tend to last me longer. THIS TOY: http://www.amazon.com/Jungle-Talk-Tug-F ... B000N5PTBC is a BIG hit with my boys and lasts me a long time, however i sometimes have a hard time finding it =(

Leather strips, pretty beads is what my sennie loves particularly. Re-use old parts of toys, tie them together with old beads, and you can save some money while keeping your sennie happy.
