Foraging- help choosing new toys

Postby marie83 » Mon Oct 15, 2012 2:46 pm

Just got Ollie one, its similar to this
http://trainedparrot.com/Foraging_Tower/
but is yellow and has 3 sliding bits of plastic opposed to 4.

It took him all of half a day to suss it out with no training whatsoever. It reccommend you put food in the lowest level to start with but I went straight for the top level with the intention of making it easier if he couldn't do it.

I'm struggling to think of ways to keep him occupied, he already has a foraging wheel and a foraging wheel with a sort of maze attatched to it, a buffet ball, 2 diffent swinging maze type toys, a treasure chest, a barrel thing with a sliding drawer that is twisted to lock it but again these were figured out in less than a day. God help you lot with the bigger species, like the 'toos if I'm struggling to keep a little conure entertained for very long.

He already has stuff like egg cartons, cardboard boxes, paper wrappers, wood, bells, acrlic toys etc which he tears open but I'm wanting something which is going to be like a puzzle toy but a bit more challenging for him. They need to be suitable for a green cheek conure to operate, he is good with bigger toys provided he will have enough strength to open them and is in no danger of getting any body parts stuck.

My cockatoos have the same foraging toys.

It doesn't matter if he's figured it out or can do it every time he's still working
for it like the wild cockatoos near my house they're foraging for food everyday but they're still doing the same thing every time

just move them around different spots everyday so they must keep searching for it

I get what your saying, I really do but I want to keep him occupied a little bit longer, literally he flies round his toys and has them completed in seconds. I do move them around but again they are big toys, not exactly hard to find. The only thing that takes him longer than a few seconds are stuff he has to shred to get the treat out but even now he has figured out the quickest way to get the treats to fall out and that doesnt take long either.

I think the trouble with foraging toys is that when they figure them out, its not foraging anymore. Stitch can open both his "barrel of fun", "treasure chest" and some hanging cups with lids on them in like 2 seconds. Its simply no challenge. Hiding seeds or nuts at various places doesnt work either, he just goes straight for them. Leroy has figured out everything but the chest as well, and now considers himself above it, and thus ignore it completely.

Our foraging toys is just another way to give Stitch and Leroy treats as it is now, only they have to work for it, at least a little bit. But its not something that keeps them occupied.

I get that too :) thats why I want new challenges for him to work out, I just need something that is suitable for his size, some of the bigger toys I fear he wont have the physical strength for but they are expensive to buy and try it out. Ollie does the barrel of fun in seconds too lol.

a good way for your bird to forage is to put them in their cage and leave food on top so there eating it from the inside and make sure theres no perches around so that they have to hang upside down and eat through the bars even my birds still struggle with it

Marie83:

"He already has stuff like egg cartons"

Where are you getting your egg cartons from to use as for bird toys?

I would love to get some for my parrot, and have been looking for a good source.

Thanks so much!
