Advanced Indoor Flight Training Parrots in Theater (Day 6)

This is an exciting update about advanced flight training in the high school theater. Although it actually took place over a month ago, it should still be interesting because it shows the training steps that were required in order to have a smooth performance at the school as you may have already seen. Also the included video shows the balcony flight recalls from multiple angles which you couldn't really see in the performance video. The article/video also gives you a sneak peek at a new parrot training product I will have coming up soon.

Hi Michael:

I enjoyed your video. Just a thought.....and I may not be seeing this correctly, but it looks like Truman is flying to you fine but having trouble orienting to the stationary perch.

Have you thought about making the stationary perch for him higher? When he flies to you, you reach above your head to catch him but the stationary perch is lower than your reach. I wonder if he has trouble getting oriented to the lower perch?

You are so handy with this stuff....I wonder if this might help Truman.

Thx

Oh, no. This isn't actually a factor much at all. It has more to do with the way the footage was taken than a practical issue. He missed landing on me a bunch of times as well and took off. It's just that A to B flights from my brother to me, instead of from me to the perch, were not videoed because we were both tied up. Of course there are a few advantages of landing on me which cannot be replaced:

-More visible from afar (perch is thin so blends in more)
-Bigger landable area (finger, arm, shoulder)
-Better immediacy of reward
-Can approach him in misflight

Truman just isn't too reliable either way though. Sometimes I would flight recall him and he would land on his perch instead. Who knows what's going through that bird brain of his. The problem is that he's not too reliable on one hand but also that he's not scared of venturing around on his own on the other.
