Emergency & Disaster Preparation For Your Parrot

In light of the recent hurricane, I wrote this article to help parrot owners think about dealing with natural disasters and emergencies as it pertains to their birds and preparations. Don't wait till it happens to prepare for it.

We live in a high bushfire risk zone, and like us, Smitten :irn: has an emergency kit ready to go at any time. Also he loves his travel cage so it's never an issue to get him in there.

We are expecting a week of 40+C temperatures (105+F) this week and take the additional step of early evacuation/relocation on days of extreme fire risk. Our plan is always to Leave Early if we can.

I would highly recommend is writing a simple plan/checklist, one thing the emergency services found here was that when people panicked, the ones that had a written plan were more likely to survive. Same with your pet, we have the following lists printed and ready to go:
*Extreme Danger Relocation Checklist
*Emergency Evacuation Checklist
*Last Resort Checklist
*Stuck in Car Checklist (
during fire front)

Our evacuation kits are ready to go as well, they are checked annually and we never remove anything from them
