Today I saw a Palm...

Postby hnhobu » Fri Feb 22, 2013 3:49 pm

Cockatoo!

When I went to go interview at the avian vet that I now volunteer at, they showed me around their boarding facility and let me get to know the birds that are there on a normal basis.

One of these birds is a Palm Cockatoo named Pearl, and she is an absolute gem. Unlike the other birds that were screaming and competing for my attention, Pearl minded her own business untill I approached her. And then once a did, she was all sweetness.

I just wanted to share my awesome experience! I know a lot of you would be interested in hearing about it. :)

You will have to let us what shes like.I always wondered if they had the typical cockatoo dispositions, but they look so different.I read once they can tell their sex by the color of their beak. The bone color female and the black male.

a Palm Cockatoo! How cool! :) I think they are absolutely beautiful. I ve always been intrigued by them because they don't look anything like the other cockatoos that one sees, like the whitish and pinkish ones (umbrellas, moluccans, etc) Ive always wondered why they have that unique skin spot around their beaks that the other toos dont have.

amazing that somebody actually has one - I've heard theyre pretty rare!

So update on the Palm:

She is amazing and leaves everyone awestruck by how silent and cautious she is. Her attitude is comparable to a Grey in my opinion, except she's even more docile. She really wants nothing to do with the other birds and prefers being by herself or with humans. She is very sweet, but she's also very stubborn. If you want her to do something and she doesn't want to, she simply will not preform for you... no matter what!

I've never seen her bite anyone to inflict pain. There have been a few times where she needed to be taken out of her cage for it to be cleaned and she 'nips', but she never applies enough pressure to hurt. It's as if she just letting us know that she doesn't want to be moved.

Hehehe, I want every bird I see! But in reality, the only way I would ever get a cockatoo is if I end up not being able to have children... and if that does happen I would like a Moluccan! They're so gorgeous!

And my volunteering is going great. The woman in charge of breeding is from Holland, and she's only been dealing with Parrots for about a year. I'm learning a lot of techniques from here, and she's learning the names of species and such from me! Right now they're trying to convince me to foster one of the lovebirds that they have for adoption, and I'm considering it. I don't want Cassette to have attitude problems because of it, though.
