New baby!

Postby Strawfrawg » Thu Feb 28, 2013 11:37 am

I went to visit my new Senegal baby at his breeder last weekend, and took his first portrait. Here he is! Hatched 1/24/13.

It was interesting seeing the breeding facility. Before I put a deposit down, I wanted to see what the place was like and get a feel for the breeder herself, as I am skeptical about career breeders. I was very pleased with what I saw. She breeds a LOT of birds, but the facility was fantastic...the barns were exceptionally clean and the birds had safe, secure, and ample outdoor space as well as toys and diversions to keep them busy. When I toured the place, the birds all came to greet us at every cage and the breeder interacted with each one. The nursery was in her house and was very well kept. She genuinely loves her birds and has plenty of help to make sure they are all cared for properly. All of the birds, from lovebirds to hyacinth macaws, seemed healthy and psychologically balanced. So I guess there are good examples of volume breeders out there. I'm glad my baby is coming from a good place.

If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands.

Thank, guys! I am so excited. I can't stand it. His cage is all ready and he has more toys that FAO Scwartz. The breeder says he came out of the egg raring to go...he's a strong and active little bugger with a lot of personality! The other babies from the same clutch of 3 are healthy but not nearly as robust. The breeder also said something interesting about sex...she's been breeding Sennies since 1970 and she says she is very good (about 95% accurate) at guessing the sex based on the size of the head at hatch-time and how quickly the beak blackens up. She thinks this one is a boy so for the moment that's what I'm going with. Will DNA test when baby has his first vet visit.

That bedding does look cozy...if you don't mind bird poop. :-D :senegal:

This is his bunkmate, an African Grey. Just thought I'd post this for AG owners who haven't seen a baby at 4 weeks. I have to say, I think my little guy is more handsome!

I dont know if you have, but I suggest you ask/demand that your breeder let your little fella keep his wings! Without clipping he will be a much happier bird :)!
