Lockheed is getting friendlier and more vocal

Postby cobaltbass » Fri Mar 15, 2013 9:42 pm

Over the last week Lockheed :budgie: has come a long way. He has started chippering a lot and bouncing around his cage playing with all of his toys. I am excited that he has finally settled in. For the past few days he has been eating bits of millet from my fingers. Today, I got him to climb into the palm of my hand and eat out of my hand. I am including a picture. Please forgive the poor quality. It was taken with a cell phone.

Unfortunately, he saw the drawer where I keep the ziplock baggie with his millet. He has been sitting on the foremost perch and staring at the drawer. After a few minutes of this he hops down to the bottom of his cage and starts trying to escape. Any ideas as to how to keep him from getting out? I do not want him to hurt himself. I have the doors twist tied shut. It seems to be working.
P.S. The Activitoys basketball toy has a problem. Lockheed loved it and played with it often. But he got stuck between the perch part and the backboard. I feel that it could be a great toy for a bigger bird but not appropriate for a smaller parakeet.

I'm happy to hear that Lockheed is warming up to you! :-) What a cute little picture of him eating millet from your hand.

Be careful with twist ties because the metal inside can be sharp and might cut him if he chews through to expose it. The only think I can think of is to buy some small toy hooks (quick links) and use them; at least the metal is safe and he won't be able to ingest it.

Maybe someone with budgies will have a better suggestion?
