HOLY #$%&! DAISY FINALLY TOOK A BATH BY HERSELF

Postby hlasdf » Thu Apr 11, 2013 9:54 pm

And I didn't have to try to coax her or anything! I've been trying to get her to bathe ever since the first day she came home! I tried sprays, sinks, and bowls, but she ran away from all of them! Then just a few minutes ago while my dad and I were eating dinner, I put Daisy down on the table and she noticed my cup of water. She started pecking at it and I assumed she was thirsty so I lowered it for her and she put her beak into it and shook her head a bit. I thought, "Haha, silly bird, that's not how you drink water." She kept doing this a couple more times and she perched both her feet on the side, then finally put her whole head and chest in! I was FREAKING EXCITED! My dad was amused but I was losing it(in a good way)! Unfortunately, the cup wasn't big enough for her to wet her entire body - just her head and chest. But who cares?!

*exhales* Just wanted to share this awesome moment! :swaying:

Aww, congrats. :D from your posts she seems like a right little character.
Do you think she chose to bathe in that cup because you were holding it and I presume drinking from it?

P.S I can tell why you chose the name daisy, it fits her perfectly. also, that last pic in your signature is adorable!
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands.

Hahaha - I can totally relate to this reaction!

Cassette has a disease which causes two feathers to try to grow out of the same follicle (I don't know what it's called in English - only in French), and getting him to take baths is one of the only things we can do to help him. It sounds simple, but getting him used to water took well over a month, and even to this day he's not a huge fan of the shower. He does like the little container of water we keep on top of his cage, though. He'll bathe in that once or twice a day!

Daisy is really adorable, and the name fits her perfectly. :) I just want to give her scritches!

Thanks! And I'm not sure, but I know she started pecking at it right before I was about to drink from it. I think me holding it did have something to do with it, seeing as how she stopped right when I set it down on the table. Maybe it was because of the green swirly designs? :D

Ooh, I'm sorry to hear about Cassette - I have a similar problem as well. I never knew that could happen to animals other than humans! I'm glad you take good care of her though! :) Out of curiosity, how does water help her condition? Keeping the irritation down?

And thanks - just be mindful of your fingers!

Wow, hnhobu...that's unfortunate about Cassette's feathers. Does being wet encourage him to preen out the extra growth? I hope it isn't too uncomfortable for him.

Congrats, hlasdf, on Daisy's successful self-bathing. I hope he won't start looking at every glass of drinking water as a bathtub!

I've been having trouble getting Marvin to like baths. He'll stand in a shallow water dish and peck at colored beads floating around him, but he won't really get down in there and get *wet*. Misting him just makes him fly back into his cage. He was getting dusty so today I just held him and wet him by hand in the sink. He didn't squirm, but he didn't love it. I'd be interested to hear suggestions from others about how to encourage self-bathing...sounds like you got lucky!

Yep! In fact, she did the same thing yesterday too :) I think the fact that the cup was transparent instead of ceramic or painted glass had something to do with it.
Have you tried to reward your bird every time s/he gets wet?

I'll try rewarding him. I'd really like him to enjoy baths more. It's so much fun watching birds bathe themselves. He watches the birds in my garden bathing in the bird bath, but he hasn't caught on that he can do the same thing.
