Neko outsmarting me

Postby indefine » Thu Apr 18, 2013 12:09 am

For those that think your fids are intelligent, i've got a story for u.

Neko, my female :gcc: is a little over a year old now and she has about 15 or so tricks that she does reliably now, including being potty-trained, fetches, plays dead two ways, is flighted and can recall. She usually picks up a trick after two or three sessions and gets really good after the fifth or so session. She's very eager to please and often will do tricks on her own to get my attention to solicit treats.

Lately however, she seems to have gotten even smarter, trying to outsmart me. First example is with going potty. She is used to going to her potty spot when let out of her cage. Done properly she gets rewarded with a treat. However, sometimes being out for a while I will ask her to go potty again. She'll go to her perch and fake pooping to trick me. I understand sometimes she just doesn't have to go on my command, but i can't help but think she is trying to outsmart me.

Another example is sometimes my wife gives her a treat by holding up the seed jar to her where she pokes her head in and picks out one seed. One seed is normal. But lately she is actually somehow hiding an extra seed in her beak while showing us that she only took one out. Crazy i know.

I didnt think birds were capable of being dishonest, or in this case, outsmarting their human companions. Sneaky sneaky.

That's funny about pretending to go potty! Lol

Mine watches to see if I'm looking so she can get to my wedding ring. I will have my hand on the couch beside her and she will be side stepping, always watching me with quick glances at my ring. Slowly slowly and very quietly...small side steps and then slowly lowers her head to my ring and then goes for it! Like I won't feel it...lol she knows it's off limits lol

They are very sneaky. Like when you put you're head and arms into the cage to retrieve some debris or clean a poop and then you lock the empty cage because the bird is one your head... Or when you're birdie sneaks out the food door and just a you turn your back jumps in the seed box and has a seed bath... yes crafty buggers!!!

That's not been dishonest! That's been smart! Good girl, Neko, you got right ahead and steal your second seed!
