What's the fastest that your bird learned something?

Postby hlasdf » Fri Apr 19, 2013 1:16 am

This could be tricks, habits, or anything!

For Daisy, I would have to say basically every trick I've taught her so far except for stepping up and "shake." Shaking took about an hour or so, and we've still been working on stepping up ever since she got here.
I remember the first time I decided to teach her targeting, she picked it up after 4-5 targets in the same session. "Spin" took about the same amount of tries, as well as "wave" and "wings," though she tends to get lazy and just barely lift her wings when she does it.
A cute thing I taught her on accident was when we were practicing "wave," I accidentally clicked once while she brought her foot up to scratch her face, thinking that she was waving. Now she sometimes tucks her leg behind her wing as if she's about to scratch herself when I say the trick along with the verbal cue. I think I may use that and teach her to do it when I say "You got a little something on your face!"

Ollie took about 3-5 minutes to learn target and less than another 5 to perfect it. He does generally pick up simple things really quickly, the exceptions to this so far have been fetch and to learn to wear a harness.

Elvis let me place the harness on him since the very first try. And now even bows his head for me to place it on him. Also he learned to come to me when I call him. :o .... :cockatoo:

Wow, he must be pretty tolerant for him to let you do it on the first try!

Yeah, I've been thinking about teaching Daisy to fetch but I'm worried about whether her attention span can take it!

Marvin's quickest pick-up so far was coming to me when called. I called him once, not expecting him to respond, but he flew right to me and has done so ever since. We haven't really tried anything complicated yet. He's 12 weeks old this week and I'm going to start with more serious training.

hlasdf...make sure to let us know how the fetching goes! I bet Daisy will surprise you.

Well, he is very young & I'm his first stable human companion. He has no baggage & only has positive experiences with humans. I waited for a day where I was super calm and talked him thru it...walla!! done deal. :danicing:

Harness training by far the quickest if you dont include her potty training herself without my knowing. . .crafty little booger. Spin and wings didnt take long either and she incorporates these actions in her daily social interaction as well as her usual routines. For example, when she feels like she won somthing, or did a trick and is waiting for her treat, she will do a combo move! Wings Up and Spin! (her i win dance).
