My cockatiel is an idiot, but a very cute idiot :P

Postby kaylab » Thu May 02, 2013 10:46 pm

I had Maccas the other night for dinner (naughty, naughty) and left the paper bag it comes in sitting on my counter. My cockatiel, Taco, quickly decided that this was the BEST THING EVER and sat inside it for agggggges. His tail is so long that he can't quite turn around properly and he looked so silly.

I told a friend about it who has birds, and he said to get a shoe box, cut a little door in it and put some stuff in, and watch him lose his mind in excitement. I did that, got a boot box which was really big and put some bobby pins (his favourite), pens, paper, wood etc for him to play with in it. He was a bit unsure, then went in and was like, 'yup, I like this. But the mess has got to go.'

He picked up every single item I'd left in there for him and dumped it all outside the little door, EVERYTHING. Then just sat in the middle of the giant, empty box, by himself, not moving, staring at me for ages while I was on my computer. I laughed, really hard!

OMG that's just like our cockatiel. They love to rearrange!

Just be careful with the pens and bobby pins, some of them have toxic substances in. Something my cockatiels enjoy is chewing bark from willow or agave roots, you can buy them in chips and they love to forage. Sometimes i will put in some apple and when Edmund finds it he makes this little growling noise like a motorbike.

You're right though its so funny when they kick everything out then sit in it! It's hilarious. They also have this perplexed look on their face that makes them look a bit simple but they obviously know what they are doing!

He is not an idiot. He was rearanging his furniture. My Tiels do it too.

The funniest of my flock is the Lovie, Tweetle Dee, he even moves his food dishes around. They are heavier than he is but somehow he does it. One day he even flipped a sauser over.

I don't think any person means a cockatiel is really an idiot. Just to us it seems a bit counter productive but its so cute. Cockatiels do seem like simpletons sometimes For example:

Edmund thinks "if I put one foot down my grate... ooo it goes through, I put the other foot down the grate.... ooooo it goes through. Both feet through the grate.... MUM MUM meeeehhh meeehhhh! I'm stuck!"

They love to rearrange. I think they experts a Feng Shui!

Hahahaha! Emmi did the same thing! We put a paper coffee filter on top of her, thinking that she would see it's a game like we do with paper towels. Nope! "OMG THERE IS SOMETHING ON MY BACK AND I CAN'T MOVE! SOMEONE HELP ME! I'M STUCK!" It's paper Emmi, you just walk out. Lol Now she gets it and it's a fun game.
