It's a girl!

Postby tacotaco » Mon Jun 17, 2013 2:17 pm

Just found out from my breeder that the test results were in and my little baby is a girl. She was born on 4/22/13 and should be home with me in about 7 weeks. Here are some incredible pictures from the breeder - you can find my little girl's name on my blog (link below) with the meaning behind it :) SO psyched right now! They say female Blue fronted Amazon's tend to be a little less aggressive etc. compared to males.

Normally, zon hens are sweeter than the males -at least, all of mine are but then my males are real nasty -LOL

she is a little beauty. Are you prepared for weaning her properly?

I am not taking her until she is fully weaned. Breeder said 6-8 weeks, maybe more. I am in no rush and will take her when she is ready :)
Glad to hear about the hens being sweeter though! Very pleased with the DNA results lol
thanks!

I've always heard that the females are sweeter, even though BF's are included in the "hot three" of 'zons. My baby boy is usually quite sweet to me when it's not breeding season.

I'm sure you're going to just love her. I love the unique and fun personalities that 'zons have!

She is gorgeous. Really glad to hear the breeder wont let you take her until she is fully weaned. Ideally leave it a week or two afterwards to prevent regression :)

Please note that no parrot is fully weaned at 8 weeks of age (not even small species like lovebirds) so you will need to continue the hand-feeding as well as offering three different kinds of soft foods on a daily basis and twice a day for a couple more months. The breeder will tell you that this is not true, that he has sold them at this age for ...... (insert number of years here) and that he/she has never had a problem but this is a salesman/lady talking (he/she will also tell you he/she doesn't do it for the money but, if this was true, he/she would not be selling the babies, he/she would be giving them away to good homes) PLUS if you go to what parrot parents do in the wild, you will find that they continue to feed their babies for much longer than just two months. BFA come from my part of the woods in South America and I can assure you the parents continue supplementing for much longer -sheesh, canaries feed their babies for over two months!

Babies that are weaned too fast usually end up with emotional and/or eating disorders so leaving her with the breeder is also not an option as he/she might not continue the hand-feeding.
