My trip to Ft. Lauderdale, FL!

Postby LadySaphine » Mon Jun 24, 2013 1:01 pm

Okay, okay, before you start to yell at me for being off-topic, on my week-long trip I saw a surprisingly large amount of parrots!

First things first, I left Peanut with my mom's friend. She has had a parrot (Sun Conure) before, and I believe her father has an African Grey. So Peanut was in good hands.

As you may or may not know, Ft. Lauderdale is in southern FL. Normally in the summer we go to Daytona, which is more of northern FL. It was quite warm and the ocean was gorgeous! On our first day, we mostly relaxed and went down to the beach. Apparently our hotel has mascots- two :macaw: s named Sara (14 years) and Million (who was 20 years old). I couldn't tell which was which, but I'm assuming Sara was the second macaw- for some reason, she was plucked of her feathers all on her body. I've seen this once before at a pet shop. Their resident parrot (I don't remember the species, it was something like a red-headed conure or something) was all bald on his belly. Anyways, the two parrots had a perch under an umbrella and spent the days outside, all day, by the beach. They were quite happy, I think.

We also went to a airboat tour, and there they had wild/feral :monk: . I took a few pictures, I'll see if I can upload them. We also saw (and heard!) two Quakers/Monks by our hotel. They were making such a loud racket I thought it was the macaws!

We also stopped by a bird rehabilitation center, were they had an Amazon, Grey, and a cockatoo (I think it was a sulfur-crested but I am not sure.) The Amazon, Fredetta, was quite the talker and said 'Hello', 'buh-bye', 'meow', and barked like a dog. The Grey, Gizmo, made mostly cool sound effects. The cockatoo, Pickles, was in the same aviary as Fred. Everybody was paying attention to Fred instead of Pickles, who got jealous! So what Pickles did was hang on to the side of the aviary and SCREAM! He had his crest up and he was bobbing his head and everything! He did that a few more times until we started to pay attention. He whispered 'Hello' but that was about it. He was strutting up and down a perch like a little turkey!

We saw a few more wild :monk: and saw somebody with a :macaw2: walking around in the Keys.

Oh, and if you live near or visiting Daytona, I suggest finding a pet shop called Mr. Petman. It's a very exotic shop- we visited last year and a few days ago, and they have lemurs, skunks, prairie dogs, reptiles (there ARE snakes here!) and sugar gliders! They have cockatiels, and you can reach down into their little enclosure and pick one up! The first visit, only one 'tiel was friendly enough. I'm sure she was a she, because she was the 'pearled' mutation and I read it was sex-linked. This time, most of the tiels were quite friendly and all but two approached our hands. There was a very sweet one who just LOVED to be held and cuddled on my brother's shoulder. We might've come home with another parrot! They also had two Pineapple :gcc: s, one of which was a wittle baby and very shy, and the other was an adult and very bitey! Somebody brought in their :macaw: , but only to be wing-clipped. :(

Overall, a very fun and parrot-filled trip! Today I did a very good cleaning of Peanut's cage. I'm getting her back later today when my mom and Peanut's caretaker get back from work.

This counts as a parrot tale, right? I hope that wasn't too long, I like to type. xD
