Alfie's first trip

My b/f and I like to go on regular trips and see the country but have had our wings clipped since I got Alfie as I don't have anyone to leave him with. Last week the b/f bought a fantastic motorhome so this weekend is our maiden voyage - me, b/f, Izzy (my dog) and Alfie are heading off to lovely Porlock in Somerset today for 2 nights, yay!! Alfie's been doing okay with his travel cage, I've been getting him used to it for the past couple of weeks and he seems comfortable, though he hasn't spent the night in it yet. He's pretty social so I'm guessing/hoping he's going to be fine because he'll be with us. My biggest concern is that he'll be shrieking if we go out for a walk and leave him in the van - it's made me think again about one of Strawfrawg's birdie backpacks so he could come with us. Anyway, it's all very exciting and I'll report back on how he takes to life on the open road!

So how did it go? I had to laugh at your comment about your own wings being clipped since you got Alfie. That's how I feel sometimes, though obviously I think it's worth it. I've had to turn down a couple of overnight trips where Marvin couldn't come along.

Marvin still loves his backpack. I left it sitting out one day whilst I was cleaning and he hopped in on his own and hung out for a while. He's like my dogs when they see their leashes....he knows the backpack means he's going on an outing and he gets excited.

I would think a trip in a motorhome could be great fun for a parrot. Or for me. I'm jealous of your new rolling accommodations...I've been on one motorhome trip and loved it. Except for emptying the septic tank, that is. Ick.

It went pretty well! Alfie seemed interested in what was going on when we were travelling and coped okay when we were at the campsite though the cage is awfully small for him and I worried about that. I looked and looked at travel cages but the larger ones have inappropriate bar spacing for a little bird. One afternoon we just sat outside reading and brought Alfie out with us (in his cage of course) and that was the best time - he was busy watching what was going on around us and was relaxed and seemed to be enjoying himself. He did come out in the van of course though he didn't fly being too small a space.The only significant hassle of sharing a motorhome with him was the mess - he's recently acquired the obnoxious habit of taking just a couple of bites of his food, whatever it is, and then chucking the rest around which just makes a horrible mess. Overall I'd say it was a success.
