JimH wrote:Pajarita, I read about the Senegal temperament in one of those basic species books at a bookshop. The first website I looked at agreed with the book so I felt confident it was accurate. So much for gut feelings. Things I've read over the last couple of days after reading Michael's response have been a very mixed bag. I am prepared to do whatever makes things good for both birds.

I'm not making things up or even basing it on my Senegal. Just on this forum I know a member who had a Senegal bite the tongue of a Jardine's parrot, another Senegal that killed two conures, and just a lot of aggression stories. Off the forum I know a Senegal that bit off a Quaker's leg and then a bunch more Senegals that got into some really serious fights.

I'm glad you rescued the other bird and want to give it a better life. That is really quite excellent. Just remember that the Senegal and new bird can't be in the same room together (both out or one out with other in).

Heed Michael's warning. Senegals are sweet as sweet can be to their chosen humans but they can be hell on wheels to everybody else, including other birds. I've taken in wild-caught male amazons that were used as breeders all their lives and they stopped attacking me within a year or less but my male Senegal, which was hand-fed and kept as a pet, hated me on sight because his chosen one (a female Senegal) loved me and it took almost four years for that bird to stop attacking me several times a day every single day! I have scars from his bites in every part of my body, including my face!
