How you Got Your Bird

Postby Rebellious » Sat Sep 28, 2013 10:59 pm

Hi guys,
I just want to know the story of how you got your bird(s). I love reading real-life stories about parrots so I hope you can share some :P

I got my first senegal parrot, Sissy, when I was twelve. My uncle got her for me for my birthday and let me tell you, I just remember being the happiest little girl in the whole world. She came in this cage with a big red bow wrapped around it. My mom wasn't too happy when she began screaming, but it was music to my ears. It's been over a decade now and I still love her.
About five or six years after getting Sissy (I was around eighteen) I started looking into getting another bird. I was looking into Indian Ringnecks. I went to many breeders around my area and many specialty bird stores. I was at this one bird store and I was handling an IRN and I just remember seeing this Senegal parrot, he was large for a Sennie, and I asked if I could check him out. He was very tame he let me pet him and even open his wings, and I just fell in love. Novice mistake yes, but I felt the connection! And I still have Sami now.
And then like a crazy person I added a Sulfer Crested 'Too to my flock. :cockatoo: Rebel used to be my brother's bird but when he left for college in another state, I decided that I would take her. She was aggressive towards females in the beginning, but I eventually won her over. Aside from the screaming and occasional moodiness, Rebel is a sweetheart. I thank my brother for giving her to me. :swaying:

What about you guys?

I was bird phobic so decided a bird was the way to fix it, I like to face my fears. I first saw a beatiful green IRN at a market and fell in love. I immediately started researching like crazy. One day I came across an add. Krystall had been rescued by a concerned neighbour after he noticed her mostly featherless at the bottom of an aviary of tiels. He waited until night and jumped the fence and stole her, given the state of his hands she put up a fight.

For some reason I fell in love. I had my partner at the times mum drive me the 2 hours to meet her. It was love at first sight. She was very weak (only weighed 87g) but had such a spark. It didn't take 30 secconds to make the decision to take her home.

It took 6 months of hard work, I had to syringe feed her for the first month and then slowly wean her because she was so weak. She also had a broken wing that had been allowed to heal badly and was never able to fly. For the first month she bit me at every feed. I'm sure she was aviary raised, and I still have the scars. She cost me nearly 10 grand in vet bills but it was worth every cent. She was my best friend for 4 years. I could do anything to that bird and she would love it. My mother eventualy forced me to rehome her when we moved (I was 16) but she went to a nice home with a man she loved.

I got Mack the Knife :amazon: from the parents of the guy who had him,but kid moved out and left him.Parents had no interest in him. He just sat in his cage all day,no toys to play with, nobody to give him head scritches, nobody for him to groom and show his affection to.... Well, all that has changed.I have had him now for a month, and he has shredded three toys, and still has four more he is working diligently on. he grabs my finger and grooms me for as long as I will hold still for it.Talks NONSTOP.Just generally a really fun guy
