Re: Rescue Adoptee: Skeeter the Red Bellied Parrot

It just occurred to me why we might like this behavior, and deem it "cute". Could it be because we're social mammals, and moving onto ones one's back in many mammalian societies indicates playfulness/submissiveness?

Ahaha I'm such an over-analyzer.

Here's a pic of Skeeter impersonating a crafty New Zealand kea:

I think you are on to something! But what I would like to know...why do they roll on their backs? Is it common in the wild? Is it just a play thing, baby thing, or submissive?

Some small species of parrots lay on their backs to be fed by the parents while in the nest.

I visited one more time today. Ah, these visits are killing me!

He came over and started to rub his head against the bars as if to say, "See? I just need to be scritched...right...here."

Got to chat a bit more about his diet, which is about 80 percent Harrison's (Adult Lifetime Course), plus several blends of nuts/seeds/veggies/fruits. He is reportedly a very good eater, which is encouraging. He has had the same toys for quite some time, though, and is not really that into shredding. They say they hope he'll get more into tearing toys to pieces once we get him home.
His bedtime is usually at 6:30 or so in the evening, with a bit extra added on in the summer months.

We'll get a more in-depth briefing on Saturday -- at least three hours or so After that, it'll be time to take him home.
