Suddenly talking

Postby shallicrs » Tue Jan 14, 2014 12:12 pm

I purchased a 7 month old Senegal Parrot this past summer. Took a while to get him to step up on request and after a few months he would make a clicking noise and respond when I made a similar clicking noise back. He did it a lot if I was out of sight. I say Hi Baby Bird whenever I walk into his room, I for a long time I kept repeating I'm a parrot when he was on my finger, and lots of Hi's and Hello's. His only reaction was to bob up and down or touch my hand with his beak. Clicks were all I ever got. I was resigned to the fact he wasn't going to be a talker. Suddenly this morning I walk into his room and am greeted with "I'm a parrot" which he cheerfully said a few times followed by "Hi Baby Bird" and "Hello" and "Hi" Each time he said any of the words they became clearer and louder and he really got excited when I repeated them back to him. Guess I will try to continue with new words to my talkative bird.

Make sure you repeat things to him that make sense to what you are doing or is going to happen, otherwise, he will just repeat like the proverbial parrot instead of utilizing cognitive speech.

Congratulations Shallicrs! I agree whole-heartedly with Pajarita.

Also remember that now you have to watch your own language (and be critical of whats on the TV!)

May your :senegal: ever now be garrulous!

How cool! I love when they surprise you with a burst of new phrases. We just went through a small burst of our own. Always so exciting!

I love how he had to remind you that he's a parrot! They are so funny! :D
