Winnie Was A Butt Head Today & Got Clipped!

Postby Scotty » Sun Jan 19, 2014 7:42 pm

Yes I know Winnie isn't a parrot, but hey I do have two.

So I thought you'd guys would still like bird stories shared.

Common Mynah birds as I have come to learn can be nasty and peck at you at times.

Well today was the last straw, Winnie would like to land on you and attack you, so I grabbed and said no and told her time to get clipped for being a bad girl.

Oh well Winnie I tried, I really liked allowing her to fly and feel more freedom, but she would abuse and land on me and some of the family members and bite them.

Sheesh after clipping her, she's been really bouncing around on the floor pissed off and yelling most of the day. She gets very vocal at times and starts talking on the floor and yelling.

So NO WINGS for you Winnie! :o

This reminds me, you know there's the Spelling Nazis, and Soup Nazis, well I guess Winnie got attacked by the Wing Nazis, LOL...

I'm going to pretend I didn't just read that and recommend you remove that and think it over for your own sake.

I actually thought I had skipped ahead to april the 1st then.......

I would rather get bitten to bits than take away any birds flight. If im in the position where im getting bitten then the way I see it is that *I* am doing something wrong that needs modifying. Mynahs are really intelligent too, have you tried training, and examining behaviour and environmental influences? Im not saying we could help but perhaps we could have made some suggestions if you had asked and detailed the problem and what you had already tried.

I agree 100% with Marie, penalizing an animal for our mistakes/shortcomings is not fair or even productive. It's nothing but a control trip. Maybe you are not a bird person after all and should consider another type of pet...

I really don't understand this. Why would you punish a bird or any other animal for your own shortcomings? It is counter productive and destroys trust, as well as in the bird's case can cause major psychological and emotional problems further down the road. but what really gets to me about this is the gloating manner in which you have presented yourself in this matter. As if you have done something in which to take pride in.

Well that is all that I can say other than that I for one am very disappointed in your behavior.

I thought about what to say, gentally, about this post. I think for me, it just comes down to poor choice of words and pictures. I was not alive when that happened, but I do have family still living, that remember that time and the loved ones they lost. I'm sure others do as well. Tack on how people feel about clipping around here and the reaction you described from your bird, I just don't think it is the best representation of you. I have seen kindness in the way you take care of birds in need.

Now I do realize that guys make off colored jokes, my husband included! Daily! I'm not a bleeding heart liberal and I'm not always PC. But I do believe there is a time and place for everything.

What's done is done and the symptom of the problem is gone, the problem is still there. Like Marie said, training can be done and it might be something to look into so your bird can feel safe and secure in her environment. You just acquired another bird and your sparrow is fairly new too. There could be many reasons for the attacks. Please find out what that is and fix or change things so she might have the chance to fly again or at the very least, alleviate some of the stress the bird is under. That stress won't go away with clipped feathers.

Have to agree, whilst my reply was supposed to be an offer of the forums support for the future whilst giving my opinion on the subject that reply was much better worded.

Tikki is clipped but that's for her own safety. we have large picture windows in our house and she flew into them when she was young.
When I was a child, I had a budgie that broke it's neck when it flew into a mirror. Don't want to see that again.
