Parrot in First Earthquake

Postby Harpmaker » Mon Mar 31, 2014 2:07 pm

We've had a some decent-sized temblors here in the last few days. Corsair :meyers: wasn't hatched for the last set, so these were her first. She does NOT approve of them. For the main one she was in her cage and sounded like she had a toe caught on something, with a lot of panicky flapping :o .

The biggest after-shock the next day found her loose, so she took wing and circled the room (looking for a stable landing point?) :flapping: . When she came down on the stairs, she was set to defend "her" step from the rest of the family when they tried to rescue her.

In both cases I held her and gave her lots of snuggles until she calmed down.

Trees sway in the wind, but this was somehow different.

I don't know if it's related, but she chose that day to start work on saying "Night-night" at birdy bed time.

Anyone else have any stories?

I don't think wild birds should care about earthquakes as they are up in trees. The sway and move all the time.

From what I have seen, the wild birds don't appear to agree with you.

We had one earthquake here (Northern California) and Emmi was very upset before it even happened. I've lived through many earthquakes, the biggest one in '89 near San Francisco. Always before an earthquake...things get silent outside. You won't find any birds or animals. Living in a redwood forest, it was very rare for the birds to stop chirping. But a little while before an earthquake...dead silence.

I'm not sure how they know...but they do. Cats are the same. We could not find our cat before the big one hit in '89. We found her hiding under a bush three days later. Birds might be used to swaying in the trees, but those trees do fall in an earthquake.

Maybe the wild birds are afraid of being smacked when trees sway at different rates?

You are right, KimberlyAnn, that cats know something-but my dogs have usually slept through earthquakes. I'm told horses all face the same direction just before the quake starts, but then, they feel micro-quakes that we don't.

Oh wow! I didn't know that about horses, very interesting.

Stay safe down there and keep the shakes south of Monterey. That's far enough away from me! Lol

One of my daughter's dogs give us about 4 hours warning before a storm.
My 17 year old cat, Fancy, finds a place away from windows.

We have been getting really bad wind storms. The wind whistles through the trees and Myrtle becomes very alert. I don't know if she was looking for the person whistling or if she was getting a flash back from the time the wind ripped her off my shoulder and put her in my neighbors tree

We've only really had one earthquake here that was big enough to be considered a "proper earthquake"
I was asleep and the only thing that woke me up was the birds panicking. Don't really know why but I wake straight away if the birds are panicking, I was completely oblivious to the cause even though it woke the other 3 people I lived with.
