Today and overall settling in

Postby shiraartain » Sat May 10, 2014 11:20 pm

Today it was around 8, getting close to sunset, and Fajr had eaten and was sitting on my knee. I was sick earlier this week and am better now so I was catching up on bonding time. He was facing away from me and eyeing his new bird gym at the other end of the room when I suddenly realized what time it was and said, "I think it's almost time for you to go to sleep. It's bedtime." He looked at me while I was speaking and then as soon as I finished, he ran down my leg and under my scarf, with his head poking out near my neck. I was completely astonished for a minute, then I started laughing. I took a video for my friends and found that he was actually closing his eyes and sleeping in there.

My mom has been insisting that he understands what we say, but I thought that was just her weird subconscious way of saying she actually likes him. I didn't believe her until today. My best guess is that he already recognizes either "sleep" or "bedtime".

I did take him to his cage a few minutes later, he was a bit crabby and making annoyed bird noises which caused me to be slightly concerned. He tried to go into his bird nest and his tail wouldn't go in and I felt immensely guilty for not noticing it was too small for him all this time. My sisters came home around that time and the eldest told me to put a few seeds inside the nest. Immediately he suddenly fit perfectly in there  . I feel like he was trying to fool me into taking him out again. (It's a Polly's Love Nest, and I triple checked that it was the size advertised for conures before buying it.)

It was the first time I spent time with Fajr in what feels like forever but is really only...3-4 days? I was avoiding handling him because I didn't know what I had, was feeling awful, and didn't want to spread my germs to my Dad via Fajr since he has a weak immune system.

My dad is his favorite person at this point since he always gets food for Fajr whenever he's eating his own meals. Fajr flies to me whenever my dad is busy with other tasks and he's feeling hungry though. It feels like a backhanded compliment . He also tries to fly to my mother whenever he sees her despite her doing her best to ignore him. I read a post on the forum today about how birds will change their favorite person depending on who gives them the most attention and that gave me a bit of hope (lol).

To be honest, I think what I wanted most in the period between giving my birds away and getting Fajr was the presence of a bird. I did select a Green Cheek Conure based on my family's lifestyle and what I wanted from a bird, but I am happy having Fajr around no matter who he's cuddling with. He's a very sharp and sweet bird (at least for now) and ignores my plants :D .
