Finally Brought Home My Baby! (PICS)

Postby kikidee » Mon Jun 30, 2014 1:06 am

Today I got to bring home Navi, my 2 month old blue Princess of Wales.
I honestly was expecting her to be very difficult to tame simply because I was told that's how parakeets are. I also was going to leave her alone the entire day so she could adjust to her new cage. Instead?
Well on the drive home she stared at me the entire time from her carrier but look a bit scared to be in it. When we got home, I put her in the new cage. She started freaking out I guess because she wasn't used to how much bigger it is than her cage at the store. She eventually calmed but she kept coming up to the door and staring at me. I opened the door just to see what she would do and she automatically jumped on me.
Maybe it is just a baby thing for now, but she is so well behaved! She loves to cuddle and ride on my shoulder, and steps up eagerly. Navi is also super quiet. She literally hasn't even bitten me once, although I never force her to do anything she doesn't want. All that being said, I am prepared for this perfect behavior to change. That is fine. I am simply happy she so far seems very comfortable around me.
I finally saw that she was falling asleep on me, so I put her in her cage and now she is sound asleep.
I will provide pictures in the morning when she is awake. I am so excited!

Parakeets are never alone in their normal state and if she was in a cage with other birds at the store then it is probable that this is the first time that she has ever been alone and that would be terrifying to her. You are all she has to be with and she will cling to that ( you) with every ounce of her being.

Congratulations! Please don't forget that this is a baby still and that means soft foods and lots of company. And, no, she won't bite you, babies never do.

She actually was the only one at the store, put in her own tiny cage. It wasn't too small but definitely not long term.
We are giving her a lot of attention and someone is almost always home. My mom held her too and she also loved staying on her shoulder for as long as she could. She also is near a big tv so she can watch that too.
Yeah I figured it was some baby behavior. Pics coming up.

Be careful of the tv, it appears that it can have an adverse effect on some birds. Radio may be a better alternative.

Thank you Wolf, AND Pajarita for your very appreciated advice. Alright I won't let her be around the tube too much. Instead I'll play some music or something nice.

Also...She seems to shiver a bit. I don't see why she'd be cold, she is inside and it is around 73 degrees F I believe. Maybe she just gets cold a lot?

Maybe she is still afraid, and that's why she is shivering. Babies do need to be kept warm, though. Is she fluffing her feathers?

I'm looking forward to seeing your pictures.

She should not be cold, if she is cold her feathers will be fluffed up and she will shiver. She will just shiver if it is fear. If she is cold then she is sick and needs to see a vet.

Well I just took her to her first vet visit and they said she looked very healthy and normal. So guess she's okay. I think she was just shivering from a little fear.
