Amos and Andy update

Postby Tman007 » Wed Jul 09, 2014 6:42 pm

Well I have been working on seeing if Amos and Andy would at least get along on the play stand. I took a picture of the play stand so you can see were the bowls are located. I also have a picture of my first a temp to see how they would do Andy went right up to the top of the tree and gave Amos a little trouble. So what I did was the next time I put a few treats in each of the bowls so that it would keep them busy and see if they would relax just a little, and it worked Andy stays down on his part of the perch and Amos stays on his. As time goes by I will let them move around and see what they do. But for now they just eat a few treats and look at each other. I do realize that one is higher then the other but I thought that if they both had treats that might not be a problem. Also they have been walking on the floor exploring so just for fun I wanted to see just what would happen. Andy was across the room and I lowered my hand down to his level and showed him the treat and called to him to see if he would come and he did his gcc hopping right over to me and stepped right up, it was great. I was telling him how great he was for doing it. It really made me feel good that he wanted to come over to me.

Be VERY careful, GCCs don't usually like larger birds and will take them on even though they are smaller. Their beaks are softer than other parrots and it's very common for them to end up with half a beak because a larger bird bites it off. They are also faster than us and a lot of damage can be done in the split second it takes for us to get to them.

Also, your birds are still very young and, as such, quite mild-tempered but, once they reach puberty, the whole dynamics will change so don't think that because it's OK now, you can lower your guard.

Thanks Pajarita I am very much watchful over them. I do realize with maturity it mite change. Let me ask you this in a flock are all flock members close or do the just tolerate each other. I just hope they get along so I can have them out together and not try and hurt each other. I don't know if it would fit here so I am going to make a new post of what I did. again Thank- You.

Flock members are close but a flock is an extended family where all the members are not only of the same species but also related and which were born into it. We like to call our birds (and us) a 'flock' but, in reality, it's not. The other thing that I noticed makes the biggest difference in how birds will relate to each other is cages and their relationship with the human. Birds would hardly ever 'take on' another bird that is flying around loose in a room but they will go straight for it if it's in a cage. Also, because we force them to depend on and bond to us, individual birds regard us as their own personal property and do not like to share us with other birds (something that, again, it's not common to happen when in an aviary setting).

Thanks, I do try and give each one the same amount of time. I am just hoping that they will just leave each other alone when their are out.

it is do-able, my two ignore each other but ollie can be quite the bully and I would never allow them to sit near each other now cuz his mood can change in a split second sometimes. Also he can run bloody fast when he goes for an attack not to mention the possibility of a flighted attack. Dont ever assume for a second you will have the awareness and speed to intervene because you more than likely wont and even if you do it will be you who is on the recieving end of a viscious attack.

ive never had a problem with the birds but im always expecting it, if I cant keep my eye on them 100% then they come out separately. I cant even allow ollie within a certain distance of the house rabbit because he is a nightmare trying to chase and attack him (not that I would ever let them interact anyway, im just saying the green cheeks have no awareness of their small size, they are fearless)

A cockatiel flock consists of any cockatiel they can call in to join them. 'tiels are such passives that they increase the number in a flock for strength and safety.

My little flock is down to four. When there were six the first nest to hatch was the only one to hatch. The others abandoned their nests to help care for the babies. When Tommy and Tammy were both off the nest, Shadow would stick his head in the box and sing to the babies. Lemone' just could not wait for the babies to come out of the nest. As soon as they did he took responsibility for feeding them. Sweetie and Twinkle only fed them if they begged.

I have found that the most aggressive birds are the little ones. The 'tiels and Love bird call to each other if the cages are separated. When they are out they get along fine. I tried adding Tweetle Dee to the flock but he bullied them so bad that they all bunched up in a corner and let him have the rest of the flight cage.
