Carrot Parrot

Postby JaydeParrot » Sun Jul 13, 2014 5:32 am

I've recently started giving my birds carrots as part of their everyday meal. They REALLY like it, they've only been having it for less than two weeks but will scream, climb out of their cage and shout at me if their food bowl doesn't contain carrot. Don't know if it contains something they've been missing from their diet (vitamin A?). Still, nice to know they like it, even if they have become little carrot addicted parrots now, :).

Carrot contain beta carotene which is the precursor to vitamin A and this is a vitamin that most parrots need and don't get enough of in the diets that we feed them.

My GCCs are carrot fiends! I sometimes give them large chunks of carrot and they return to me a very small amount of shredded pulp. It always feels like a win when you find something they really like, doesn't it?

My birds get cooked carrots everyday in their gloop and raw ones once a week. It's one of those veggies that they all like and thank goodness for that as they are so very healthy for them!

Carrot and Banana Parrot

Postby c marvel » Sat Nov 15, 2014 3:36 am

I've been giving my baby senegal Vest carrots too. He really likes carrots and bananas. He knows what a banana is. If I hold one up by his cage he really gets excited.

Rambo taught Myrtle to eat carrots but he bites each one first then starts with the last one. My cockatiels do not like raw carrots but they love the ones in the Mixed Vegetable bag.
Rambo would not eat bananas but Myrtle wants to try everything I have. She taught him to eat bananas.
One day I found her in the kitchen and tried to shoo her out but she would not go. She had her beak stuck in a big mango.

Yes, they all seem to enjoy making a mess of things more than actually eating them but they do.

the thing is even if your parrot only seems to play with them with little intake they are still getting some goodness out of them although obviously its better if they actually eat more of it. Playing with it will also convince them it is food eventually too.

The only vegetable my parrot really will eat much of is peas. However, as long as they are cooked...he will also take a few bites of carrot.
