my Blue an Gold just laid an egg

Postby Story » Fri Aug 15, 2014 11:48 am

I came home this morining and found that my "male " B&G has laid an egg. "She" is moving the egg around the cage. I think she wants to make a nest in the bottom. What should I do. Should I let it be or remove it, I have had Duncan oh name change maybe needed Miss Duncan :D anyway I got her in 1997 and this is the first egg she has ever laid. She was a male that was supossibly sexed by surgery and sold as a male. She was 6 months old when I got her.
Anyone have any thoughts? I need to know what expext from now on. Please help

thanks

The same story happened to "santino" (michaels green winged macaw)!
in general, let the egg be until the bird loses interest.

Except for a few dietary changes, mostly an increase in calcium prior to the start of breeding season so that she doesn't take calcium from her bones for egg laying, and periodically removing an egg, not much. She will still be the same bird that you have always had.

Yep, no change in her care except for extra calcium after they lay (it takes 25% of their reserves and they need to replenish them). The 'surgical' sexing is something that breeders do with babies because it's so cheap (I read of an avian vet that charged $5 a baby) but it's a TERRRIBLE thing to do to a baby and, as you can see, not accurate at all. You can always change her name to Danka.

Thanks for the info,
I see she is still rolling the egg around on the floor of the cage. I was told by a guy who hatched her to take the real egg out and put a fake egg in, one like the kind you put in with chickens. anyone have any thoughts on that.

Replacing the real egg with a fake one, in my opinion, works best if you also provide a nest box of some sort, otherwise I would just wait until she loses interest and then remove the egg.

The fake eggs are only necessary when there is a male bird present to ensure that a fertile egg is not incubated and you end up with a baby bird. If the female is by herself, the egg is infertile so even if the hen was setting (which she is not), nothing will come out of it. But if you want to buy one and switch it, it's fine. It certainly won't hurt any...

You can also make a fake egg by taking the egg when she loses interest in it and poking a hole in each end and filling the egg with plaster of paris.

Taking into consideration how upset she was when you took her egg, I suggest you make it a point to order a couple online because she will, most likely, continue laying now that she started (not necessarily immediately or even this year -the breeding season has been over for weeks and weeks so you might want to reconsider her current light exposure schedule - but in the future)
