She Laid Another Egg

Postby Story » Mon Sep 22, 2014 11:13 am

Last night Miss Duncan laid another egg, She is sitting on it and is very protective of this one, she will only eat if I put her food close to her on the floor, She would not use the box I made she tore it up. Im worried about her having the eggs so close to each other, The other was in Aug. :macaw:

Make certain that she gets a calcium supplement although it is a little late. The average clutch size is 2 to 4 eggs, so I would expect that she will lay an egg every couple of days until she has her full clutch size and will sit until she decides that they will not hatch.
The only thing to do is to keep her to a solar light schedule, give her the appropriate diet as has been described already and give her some additional calcium for a week or two. From there nature will do the rest and hopefully by the time breeding season starts this next time her system will have reset to where it should be. There is nothing else that needs to be done.

There are various calcium supplements available but I would think that a cuttlebone should be adequate to her needs.

Well, cuttlebone is fine as long as you are providing her with a vit D3 supplement, food that has been supplemented with it or if she is exposed daily to direct sunlight (no glass between the sun and the bird), otherwise, it's useless because the body cannot absorb calcium without it.

But her eggs are not too close. As a matter of fact, they are not close enough to be considered part of the same clutch. Now, you have to be extra careful about her light schedule AND her diet because macaws are all low hormone birds and for a macaw to lay the way she has and this time of the year, something is out of whack (macaws never lay when by themselves and kept at the right light schedule and diet).

No, don't block the light coming in. The trick is keeping them to a solar schedule -like chickens, up with sunrise and to bed with sunset but they need to be exposed to the twilight. What do you feed her, exactly?
