Isis Redbelly

Postby Pajarita » Tue Sep 23, 2014 11:06 am

I think I forgot to tell you about Isis. She is an African Red Bellied Parrot, one of the few species of parrots that are dimorphic and because males have red on their bellies while females don't, the hens are usually considered 'drab' but this cannot be farther from the truth! They have a subtle beauty, the kind that you need to spend time looking at the bird to actually see it. Her plumage is actually quite striking when you look at it carefully. At first sight, she looks like a dark grey and green bird but her plumage has the most astonishing degrade! Her head is a steel gray, almost silver at the top of her head, it gets darker as it goes down and it starts mixing with green until it reaches an olive shade on the bottom part of her back but, if you look at the individual feathers, you see that the center of the contours are beige while the edge is grey and, as it changes to green, it becomes turquoise on the belly with yellow centers and this creates the most BEAUTIFUL scalloped effect! Plus, they have gorgeous red or bright burnt orange eyes!

The poor girl ate nothing but raw nuts in her previous life but she loves her gloop now and is widening her diet 'horizons' daily (she now eats several fruits and some greens and veggies) but she is the sweetest, sweetest, sweetest thing! Never bites, never screams, never chews on furniture or clothes, doesn't bother other birds, asks you for head scritches all the time but it's not clingy at all and follows me around the house when I do my chores in the early morning to the point that she has learned my routine so well that she flies up the stairs to wait for me exactly when I am supposed to go  - clever girl!

Her previous owner said she had only said Hello once, very softly, and never again but he is wrong because she says 'Come here', 'Baby' (and 'Come here, baby'), 'Pretty bird' and 'Salaam alaikum' which leads me to believe that he is a Muslim (he's from Hungary). She also says something that sounds like human speech when she is annoyed but it must be Hungarian because I can't understand a single word :D

She ended up with me by accident, actually. I saw an ad on NYC Craigslist and answered it because it was asking for a home with a ARB male and I have a friend who had just taken in one that is completely hands-off so I figured he could definitely use a bird friend. So I started corresponding with the guy, asking and answering questions about diet, light schedule, etc and invited him to come over and see my birdroom, which he promptly accepted. He did come but he did not come alone, he came with Isis which prompted a bit of a scolding from me because he had used the subway to get to Manhattan and the train to come into NJ and this was not only a long trip but also way too stressful for her. We had a nice visit and they left BUT then he emailed me telling me that he had decided that he did not even want to check out my friend (she lives in Pennsylvania), that he wanted me to have her. Problem was, he was leaving for Hungary in a week so I was in a quandary about what to do as I did not want her going to a rescue but felt she did not really needed me. But, of course, you already know what the denouement was as I am telling you about her  And, although I feel guilty about taking her in, I have to say she is the perfect, perfect, perfect pet parrot! Something so very rare that even exceptions are usually unheard of!

Congratulations on your new parrot, pajarita! She sounds like a wonderful bird. I wish you many years of joy with her. I thought I would never hear "perfect parrot" from you but I am so glad that I did. Is this a common species? I have not heard of it. Also, I would like a bird room and I think I can do it but do you think it causes jealousy? How are the birds reacting to isis? How recent was this? Sorry for sounding like a four year old toddler with all my questions! Lol
I am sure you will give isis the best captive life any bird could hope for, and best of luck.

You have mentioned accepting Isis, Pajarita, but not the whole story. Perhaps she was sent to bring you comfort this month when your flock numbers were reduced.

As for the speaking, it wouldn't have to be Hungarian. Corsair has a habit of saying a string of syllables with no recognizable words in them. My daughters did something similar when they learned to talk (but not my son. Boys and girls are DIFFERENT.)

African Red Bellies are a size up from Senegals--so between Kili and Truman. Not particularly common in the US, but not rare.

Hmmmm, their bodies are similar in size but a bit bulkier (they weigh just a tiny bit more than IRNs) and, of course, they don't have the long 'parakeet' tails of the IRNs. They are bigger than senegals but they are VERY similar to them in the way they move, fly and vocalize. I don't know if their temperament is similar because I only have the one female and one cannot tell anything about a species from one individual but if I had to go with an opinion based only on her, I would say that they are not as aggressive.

And, actually, Harpmaker, she has been here since the beginning of July.

And, yes, she is a perfect parrot but I think I have many 'perfect' parrots :D Perfect parrots are not perfect human pets and that's where the difference lays. Anybody can have a perfect parrot - all it takes is work, time, commitment, love and the understanding that parrots are parrots and not dogs with wings.

Perfect.... This is one of those words, terms, thought forms that is easy to say but it has many different connotations and it is not easy to pin down what is perfect. I say this because what one person considers to be perfect is lacking to another. Also what one considers to be perfect in one set of conditions is not when applied to another set of conditions. Due to this it seems to me to be a quite variable term and also a very individualized and subjective one. Just my thoughts.
It still sounds to me like it is a wonderful bird and a pleasure to interact with, you are both very lucky to have the other.

Sounds like isis is as nice as an IRN! (Every one I saw let me hold them and were the kindest things)
As for perfect, I don'the think anything in this world is, so I never say that word with meaning. I don't think anyone could even completely understand perfection. Of course, I get the message that isis is a dream bird.

I believe that there is a tremendous amount of perfection in the world it is just that sometimes our perception of it is skewed.

I agree 100%, Wolf. I find everything in nature absolutely perfect... well, with the exception of mankind.
