It may very well be that he doesn't have the needed vitamin d-3 and magnesium to absorb the calcium so it may be a good idea to supplement them with vitamin and minerals, but if you do please be certain to use an avian supplement as the ratios are much different than human ones.

What do you all think of a Summer outdoor aviary for Blu? I think he would enjoy the sun and the flying room but I would have to bring him in each night since it gets a little chilly but what do you think. Would it be beneficial or a waste of time.

I think that it is a good idea and am planning on one for my birds as well. You just have to be careful of what materials that you use in its construction.

And that the bird is not by himself out there -that would be highly stressful.

That was one of my other concerns. I cant get another bird so I was worried about that. If I sat out in it with him and read or something would it be fine? I wanted one so he can have a little more flight room and get real foraging time

But you have two birds and if you have them out together in the house then why not in the aviary as well? And yes there is no reason to not spend time in the aviary with them, I know that mine will be for them as well as for me to enjoy the outdoors together.

Connor cant fly and I dont know if I will let him become flighted. I could let them both fly in the aviary if I dont keep him clipped.

I would let him fly as it is not good for them mentally, emotionally or physically to not be able to fly. Did you know that in addition to a poor diet that the biggest reason for heart disease in birds is the lack of flight? Did you know that heart disease in the wild segment of the bird population is extremely rare?
I have four wonderful birds and they all fly, they range in size from a little 1 ounce Parrotlet, smaller than your budgie, all the way up to my Yellow Nape Amazon. Their cages are all open when I am home and in the house. Sometimes it can get rather interesting when Senegal, Parrotlet and CAG all choose me as their perch at the same time, especially if they think it is time for some alone time on the human.
Please, for the well being of the birds give this the consideration that it truly deserves.

I did not know that. Thank you for that info. I will not clip him, which is probably a good thing since we have cats and a dog.

A couple questions about an aviary is do I have to worry about predators and diseases? We have racoons , possums, hawks, wild cats and a couple others. We also have alot of birds coming to our feeder and do the transmit disease?
