There are over 700 species of grasses in Australia and, although it would be great to be able to offer ground foraging Australian birds exactly the same species they would get in the wild, I don't think it's really necessary so wheat, canary and millet seeds would grow well and they will enjoy them. But you should also feed greens that you can find in the supermarket - like romaine/green leaf/red leaf/boston/butter lettuces, escarole, chicory, endive, nappa/red/green/savoy cabbage, regular/red/rainbow Swiss Chard, bok choy, broccoli, broccoli-rabe, dandelion greens, regular and dinosaur kale, etc. I don't ever feed my birds spinach and hardly ever collard/turnip/mustard greens but, with the exception of endives (which are expensive because I have so many birds, they get all the others in a regular basis and they like them all.

So a few updates. I went out of town for thanksgiving and I took Connor with me. I also found out the poor thing gets car sick. He was make unhappy noises for most of the trip. It helped if I put my hand in the carrier and scratched his head. He does NOT like going on car trips ahaha.
I also went to a pet store to get some wheat grass. Well they had some but it had a lot of brown and was really wilted. I look at it since it had some green and I thought maybe I would revive it. I pulled back some of the grass to see if it had any thing else wrong with it and it was disgusting. It was black sludge and had mold ALL over it. It was horrible. Sorry Blu not getting any grass from that store haha

They used to sell cute little "grow your own parakeet grass" kits that had a tiny pot with growing medium and seeds-just add water. The real selling point was that the pot had an integral plastic grid on top to keep the budgies out of the dirt underneath it, and a cage holder. The water intake of the pot was sized to stick out between the bars of a budgie cage so you didn't have to stick your hand in the cage to add water. Of course, the pot was so tiny a single budgie could raze the grass off at the grid in minutes.

The closest thing I could find on the web these days is here: http://priscillaspetproducts.com/shop/product/301-500Kbird.html but the tiny pot appears to be no longer in existence. Mine disintegrated long ago from sunlight deteriorating the plastic.

When you ran out of the supplied seeds it worked to plant the parakeet seed that was all the poor things normally got to eat back then. It was no wonder they polished off their only greens so quickly.

That is a pretty cool product!! I would use a bigger tray or pot so he has more grass to eat and play in though.

All you need is a stainless steel baking pan or shallow bowl, organic soil and seeds.

Hmmm, I have to admit that I don't like them. They are too open and I think that would make a little bird to feel way too vulnerable (nowhere to hide). I like the ones that have solid walls with little windows. I have a King's aluminum carrier for the larger birds and I always cover them with a towel or a blanket leaving just the front uncovered. I am always very worried about them been stressed out...

I cover up his cage when he is in the car. I like how sturdy this cage is though.
