I've never had a single problem avoiding babies and, with budgies, although they are HIGHLY opportunistic breeders (meaning they will go into breeding condition VERY easily and even if not all the conditions are good), I've never even had a single hen laying eggs except for a little girl years and years ago that had made a nest in a plant pot that was hanging from the ceiling (I used to give them spider plants to eat) without my noticing (and I should have because I kept on seeing her flying around with dirt in her beak -she dug a little tunnel under the roots- but I did not put 2 and 2 together at the time). All you have to do is keep them at a strict solar schedule, be very careful about feeding protein and not give them nests. Whether they are social or not depends on what you expect from them and how you handle the situation. Budgies love other budgies and, most likely, Blu will want to be with his bird friend more than he would want to be with you but this is the way Nature made them and what makes them happy so, in my personal opinion, it's a small price to pay for the peace of mind of knowing that your bird is much happier (AND healthier!).
And, yes, budgies LOVE greens and kale is VERY nutritious (try the red one as well as the green BUT make sure it's organic because it's on the 'dirtiest' produce list). Dandelions are another big favorite of them and you can get them from your own garden if no chemicals are used on it.
