Anyone read to their parrot?

Postby paper_lantern » Tue Nov 04, 2014 6:28 pm

My coworker (I work in a Hospital), gave me a children's book entitled Harold Finds a Voice . She knows I love parrots and the hospital was getting old of some children's books that were sitting in the waiting room. The main character is a parrot named Harold who becomes bored with imitating sounds and wants to find his own voice. I figured that after training and playing, while we are having "cuddle time" it wouldn't hurt to read to Chubby. I was right! He loves looking at the bright watercolors on the pages and the sound of my voice reading seems to relax him a lot. It's become an almost nightly ritual. Has anyone else ever tried reading to their bird? Or am I just crazy?

Well I can't say that you are just crazy because you read to your bird, because I read to mine and also hunt for parrot videos to watch with them. So you may be crazy, but you are not just crazy.

LOL - I don't read to my parrots but I talk and sing to them ALL THE TIME (according to my husband who likes to get up late and is waken up every morning by me and the birds chatting and singing up a storm  -the neighbor also complained about my talking and singing loud early in the morning)

I personally don't read to mine because I have plenty to say to them anyway. I do suggest sitting outside the cage reading to them as part of the taming process as some people find it hard to "talk" to an animal. I've found those I've helped irl soon get over that shyness and end up talking more to their pets than other people!!
I do make jokes that any animal getting inflicted with my singing voice would run, fly or slither a mile but in all honesty the birds don't seem to mind and harlie actually seems to like it- strange creature... lol

Well, I guess I'm not so weird after all haha.

I talk to Chubby constantly throughout the day, the reading thing was sort of just an experiment but since he seems to like it I'll keep doing it. :) I have a horrible singing voice, so I try not to do that too often hahaha

I read to mine in self defense. If I don't they try to destroy whatever I am reading, they still try when I read to them, just not as much. My singing voice is enough to raise the dead, but the birds don't seem to mind it.

I tell them good morning and then my plans for the day. I find I get more enjoyment talking to them than any other in the house. Myrtle and I sing and she corrects me if I get it wrong. Rambo does not always listen. Some times it is like he is annoyed and asks me if I gotta problem. I talk to the cockatiels and always answer when they ask what are you doin.

Read to them, I don't need to read to them I have major conversations all the time. In the morning when I go in the bird room and they are calling out I say good morning to them tell them how beautiful the day is. I always talk to them., They day they talk back is the day I just LOL. I have a 18yr old cat that is a talker I can talk to him. So no big deal talking to my parrots.
It takes a great man to give advice tactfully
But a greater to accept it graciously

I used to have a mouthy cat. I always knew where she was. She learned to say Momma, milk, out and no (to her out meant through the door). That is all she needed to make herself known.
My uncle had cancer and no one in NJ to take care of him so he came here to die. Calicat stayed with him only leaving to eat and use litter box. I could hear talking down the hall. When I went to check it out Calicat and my uncle were holding a conversation (I guess with enough morphine patches on you learning cat was easy). When he was still up and moving he called her PushyCat.
